About us
Do you know your way around a multimeter? Ever lost an afternoon happily sorting sensors or debugging a breadboard setup? Maybe you've helped someone solder for the first time, or you're the go-to person when a 3D printer goes rogue. If that sounds like your world-we think you'll love ours.
Welcome to UCL East. We're building more than just a new campus-we're building a future for hands-on innovation. Located on the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, this is where ideas come to life: through collaboration, creativity, and some properly impressive kit.
At the heart of it all is the Innovation Laboratory-a shared, interdisciplinary space that brings together students and staff working in robotics, AI, design, fabrication, and more. With purpose-built facilities, cutting-edge equipment and a community of curious minds, this is where wild ideas get made real.
We're proud to be based in Newham-one of the UK's most diverse boroughs-and committed to building a team that reflects that energy. We've even got a student-made video tour of the lab, so you can take a look for yourself.
About the role
We're on the lookout for an Innovation Lab Support Technician who's hands-on, technically savvy, and excited to work in a space where no two days look the same.
You'll be a vital part of the team that keeps our lab running smoothly-setting up kit for teaching sessions, helping maintain tools and machinery, keeping things safe and tidy, and making sure students and staff get the best out of the space. Whether it's prepping equipment for class, restocking components, troubleshooting a project build, or giving someone a quick crash course in safe soldering-you'll be there.
This is a student-facing role, so we're looking for someone who enjoys helping others and can stay calm when things get busy. You'll also support the team across areas like the PCB room, mechatronics cluster, and fabrication zones, stepping in when needed and learning as you go.
You'll work closely with the Innovation Laboratory Technician and Manager, and have the chance to build your own skills across a wide range of equipment and systems. If you're looking to develop your technical career in a creative, collaborative environment - this could be your next step.
About you
You've probably worked in a lab, workshop, maker space or hands-on teaching environment before. You're comfortable around technical equipment, and you take pride in a workspace that's clean, safe and well-organised.
You might not know everything yet - but you're keen to learn. You understand what good support looks like: clear instructions, practical help, and a calm approach when something's not working as expected.
You've got experience with some of the following: basic electronics, rapid prototyping (3D printing, laser cutting, CNC), PCB fabrication, motion tracking, CAD, or general workshop tools. You're curious, reliable, and good at problem-solving - whether that's fixing a fault, finding a workaround, or helping someone figure out why their Arduino isn't doing what it should.
Most importantly, you enjoy helping others succeed. You're a team player, a safe pair of hands, and you bring a positive, can-do attitude to the lab, even when the day gets messy.
