Job summary

STRABAG is seeking an experienced Ecological Clerk of Works to oversee ecological aspects across major infrastructure projects in the UK. You will supervise on-site ecological activities, ensure compliance with mitigation measures and coordinate with contractors, clients and regulators to minimise environmental impact.

The role requires a degree in Ecology or Environmental Science, membership of CIEEM or eligibility, and strong field survey skills with experience in construction settings.

Qualifications

• CIEEM membership or eligible is required.
• Experience as Ecological Clerk of Works or ecological consultancy.
• Degree in Ecology or Environmental Science.
• Protected species licences desirable.
• Strong field survey and reporting skills.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement.
• Ability to work independently in a construction environment.
• Good knowledge of UK wildlife legislation.

Responsibilities

• Provide on-site ecological supervision during pre-construction, construction and post-construction phases.
• Ensure compliance with ecological mitigation measures and environmental commitments.
• Conduct toolbox talks and ecological briefings for contractors.
• Supervise ecological surveys (e.g., nesting birds, bats, otter, badgers, newts).
• Advise on best practice construction techniques to minimise ecological impact.
• Monitor exclusion zones, buffer zones and habitat protection areas.
• Produce site visit reports and compliance audits; maintain records.
• Assist in drafting Environmental Management System docs and planning submissions (CEMP, LEMP).
• Liaise with stakeholders including planning authorities, ecologists and NGOs.
• Respond promptly to ecological issues and provide solutions to avoid delays.
