A leading university in Bristol is looking for an Information Compliance Officer to enhance its compliance with information regulations. This role involves managing information requests, providing expert advice, and ensuring adherence to legislation while contributing to various institutional projects. The successful candidate will play a key part in maintaining the university's reputation for excellence in information handling.
The University is recruiting an Information Compliance Officer to help it meet important statutory requirements around the management and use of the information it holds. The Information Compliance Team is responsible for ensuring institutional compliance with information-related legislation and regulation, and this post will enhance the Team’s ability to fulfil this objective. It is an exciting opportunity to bring expert knowledge and independent judgement to a diverse range of interesting work and find appropriate solutions.
The Information Compliance Team is currently mid-way through the delivery phase of an institutional GDPR Project and is recruiting this new team member to ensure business-as-usual demands can be met during this period, though there may also be the opportunity to contribute to project workstreams. The post is funded up to August 2026.
The role holder will provide advice and direction to all areas and levels of the University on how to apply the requirements of information legislation. They will handle a caseload of information rights requests from start to finish, taking decisions on appropriate responses. This will include freedom of information, subject access and other statutory rights requests, requests from external agencies, as well as associated complaints.
They will play a key role in the Information Compliance Team’s data protection work, including managing data breaches, working with colleagues across the institution to conduct data protection impact assessments and responding to diverse requests for advice. They will also maintain and develop policies, processes and initiatives that incorporate both best practice and operational needs, as well as maintain the University’s record of processing activity and information asset register.
You should have a clear understanding of the legislation, regulation and codes of practice governing information compliance, with experience of applying best practice requirements within a complex organisation. This should include the development and implementation of processes, policies and improvements to drive compliance and operational effectiveness.
You will need to apply problem-solving abilities to complex scenarios, handling diverse queries and advising independently while using your own specialist expertise and judgement. The ability to manage time and workload effectively is essential, working to multiple deadlines and fulfilling responsibilities in a well-organised manner. This includes oversight of wider team requirements. Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills are needed in order to influence stakeholders and represent the University in an official capacity.
