Job description

This is a great opportunity for an experienced Commercial Contracts Lawyer to work within a commercial and modern environment, which also offers flexibility and part-time hours for this role. With an official job title of "Legal and Contract Manager", the company is looking for someone who wants to work 3-4 shorter days per week, helping the business form and amend contractual changes to client contracts. This personwill report into the Transformation Director and will have one direct report and are expected to be hands on in this role. Very often, the company starts with their own set of standardised terms, which then their clients come to them to propose amendments. We are looking for someone who can implement these changes and offer high-levels of customer service, while still protecting the company's best interests. The company prides themselves on their drive to increase standards across the commercial insurance industry, with a thorough, forensic approach which has earned them a reputation for exceptionally high-quality work and a method that does not shy away from uncovering uncomfortable truths and challenging accepted wisdom. Their clients come to them when the insurance market has let them down. They then never go back to the old-fashioned way of doing things!

Responsibilities will include:

  • To issue and execute that range & volume of largely standardised contracts, typically via Adobe/Docusign.
  • To build and evolve the set of agreed standard ‘endorsement’ amendments in use with standard contracts.
  • To track and maintain a full record of all signed & outstanding contracts around the business.
  • To build on and update historic work with external FCA compliance consultants (ICS) to implement relevant checks & controls across the business in line with the compliance monitoring plan.
  • To manage Bar Standards Board ‘Licensed access scheme’ applications & renewals.
  • To managePI, D&O and general business insurance renewals (collating various input from technical team as insurance experts).
  • To support the design and execution of regulatory solutions for non-UK work (e.g. ensuring compliance with existing model for EU insurance regulatory passporting, exploring related options for new business opportunities in UAE, USA etc)
  • To produce regular board reports on compliance matters, contract issuance stats and workstream progress.
  • To maintain, issue and own all standard contracts used by the business working with the technical teams to support the design of contracting approach for new services.
  • To update and maintain the compliance staff handbook and relevant compliance policies contained therein, including maintenance of internal registers (e.g. breaches, complaints, gifts & hospitality, etc.).
  • To track and maintain a log of all business agreements and manage special requirements arising, e.g. ‘secrecy list’ of clients not consenting to identification as a client.
  • To deal with ad-hoc legal matters where arising but not requiring external counsel input, e.g. lease agreements, non-complex disputes etc.

What we're looking for:

  • A UK qualified lawyer (SRA or CILEx) who has a background within commercial and contract law
  • circa 5+ PQE
  • Someone who will benefit from the part-time hours and flexibility on offer
  • Someone who can lead and manage other members of staff in a positive manner

Hours and benefits:

  • circa 10:00 - 15:30, 3-4 days per week, between Monday to Friday
  • Based in central Exeter (with an encouraged"go home on time" culture)
  • 25 days annual leave (or pro rata)
  • Share scheme options
  • The opportunity to join an ambitious and growing business
  • Potential to work 1-2 days from home
  • Statutory pension
  • Genuine progression and career pathways structure
