Connected Places Catapult (CPC) is the UK’s innovation accelerator for cities, transport, and place leadership. We curate collaborative ‘Innovation-as-a-Service’ for businesses, public bodies, and infrastructure providers to catalyse step-change improvements in the way people live, work and travel.

The Role

The Connected Places Catapult accelerates smarter living and travelling in and between the places of tomorrow. We focus on growing businesses with innovations in mobility services and the built environment that enable new levels of physical, digital and social connectedness. We operate at the intersection between public and private sectors and between local government and transport authorities. We convene the disparate parts of the market to help innovators navigate the complexity of doing business, creating new commercial opportunities and improving productivity, socioeconomic and environmental benefits for places.

We are seeking an enthusiastic Impact Assessment Specialist to join our Business Case & Impact Assessment Team. The role will lead a broad range of analyses on the economic, social and environmental impacts of new technologies across multiple domains, including mobility, the built environment and decarbonisation. This is an exciting time to join a team that is conducting ground-breaking analysis and thought leadership on the impacts of new and innovative products, services and technologies. You should be passionate and skilled at conducting rigorous qualitative and quantitative analysis throughout various stages of programme lifecycles from bidding for funding to supporting feasibility studies, pilots or large-scale trials.

The Business Case & Impact Assessment Team supports project across the whole Connected Places Catapult and as such you will typically be working on multidisciplinary projects with engineers, data scientists, planners, modellers, software developers, environmental specialists, social researchers, designers and a diverse range of external stakeholders

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead economic analysis on a diverse range of subject areas such as the impacts of new innovations on society, the economy and the environment.
  • Lead and design Impact Assessment Work Packages and collaborate across inter-disciplinary project teams.
  • Act as a specialist and a ‘go-to’ resource within CPC for impact assessment and analysis.
  • Devising new approaches and metrics to impact assessment across a wide range of project types, locations and subject areas where precedents may not exist.
  • Use best practice and knowledge of appraisal and impact assessment to provide high quality analysis for partners and stakeholders.
  • Undertake data analysis, horizon scanning, logic mapping, roadmap development and research as required to meet project needs.
  • Produce high quality reports, analysis, graphs, charts, blog posts and case studies to enable the findings of your analysis to be disseminated either within the project team or more widely on behalf of the catapult.
  • Providing expertise and content support to various projects across the catapult, while supporting the activities of other colleagues.
  • Ensuring an ethos of equity, inclusivity and diversity underpin your work activity, contributing to inclusive innovation across all Catapult activities.
  • You may be required to undertake any other reasonable duties to support the Catapult in achieving its strategic outcomes and ensure effective business operations.

Requirements

Required skills and experience

  • A degree in economics, a related discipline, or significant demonstrable experience.
  • In depth understanding of economic theory and methods that enable you to analyse the benefits and impacts of innovation in a pragmatic manner.
  • Significant experience of designing and undertaking impact assessments and evaluations across a range of different areas.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Effective communicator, adept at distilling complex technical concepts into easy-to-understand language for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Able to use economic models and conduct quantitative analysis.
  • Familiar with and have experience of using UKs ‘Green Book’ and 'Magenta Book’ for project appraisal and evaluation.
  • You will be able to present the results of your analyses in high quality written reports, stakeholder meetings, and online presentations.
  • An interest in technology and innovation and how this could be used to improve the places where we live and work.
  • Experience in leading and facilitating workshops.
  • Post-graduate degree or other graduate continuing professional development.
  • Data analysis and/or visualisation experience using python, ‘R’ or other statistical packages.
  • 9 day fortnight for everyone, we have a full company shutdown every other Friday.
