Job summary

SSE plc is seeking a Lead Engineer to drive civil engineering capital maintenance across a portfolio of hydro assets. You will lead engineers, partner with operations and planning teams, and ensure safe, efficient asset management aligned with SSE Renewables’ net-zero goals.

The role suits civil or mechanical engineers with proven project delivery experience in an operational environment, offering a permanent, full-time role with flexible options and a supportive benefits package.

Qualifications

• Chartered Engineer status or progress towards professional registration.
• Experience delivering engineering projects in an operational environment.
• Knowledge of hydro assets (dams, waterways, flood gates, valves) is advantageous.

Responsibilities

• Shape annual work programmes, budgets and resource plans, ensuring priorities support our business objectives.
• Take ownership of project and programme finances, maintaining tight cost control and accurate forecasts.
• Support outage planning and coordinate engineering input to maximise asset availability and performance.
• Build trusted relationships with operational teams, contractors and external stakeholders to drive successful delivery.
• Coach and mentor engineers, building team capability and supporting future succession.
