Job summary

Confidential, based in Colchester, is seeking an experienced Bookkeeper to join a trusted accountancy firm. You will manage a portfolio of small business clients and carry bookkeeping and accounting services through to trial balance.

Qualifications

• Proven experience in bookkeeping or accounting, preferably in an accountancy practice.
• Experience managing a portfolio of clients across multiple businesses.
• Strong technical bookkeeping knowledge from trial balance to final accounts.
• Practical experience preparing and submitting VAT returns.
• Experience preparing management accounts.
• Excellent attention to detail and a methodical approach.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; able to resolve discrepancies.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with clients.
• Ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines.
• AAT qualification advantageous; relevant experience considered.

Responsibilities

• Manage a portfolio of small business clients for bookkeeping and accounting services.
• Review and prepare accounts to trial balance.
• Handle prepayments and accruals.
• Prepare and submit VAT returns.
• Perform bank reconciliations, purchase and sales ledgers; credit control.
• Prepare management accounts and maintain fixed asset registers.
• Address client queries and ensure bookkeeping quality control.
