Job summary

WSP in the UK & Ireland is seeking a Cable Systems Engineer to design, specify and deliver HV/HVDC cable systems for Scotland's energy projects from Glasgow, Edinburgh or Perth offices, combining local knowledge with global expertise.

You will perform cable studies, assess installation methods, and collaborate across multidisciplinary teams, with opportunities for professional development and Chartered Engineer progression, plus hybrid working arrangements.

Qualifications

• Degree in Electrical Engineering or Power Engineering or related discipline.
• Experience designing HV and EHV cable systems and HVDC exposure is advantageous.
• Knowledge of cable system design, ampacity and rating studies, and installation methods.
• Experience supporting major transmission and distribution projects and renewable energy developments.
• Familiarity with IEC, CIGRE, EI or IET standards and FAT/testing.
• Ability to lead technical teams and act as SME within multi-disciplinary projects.
• Willingness to travel within the UK and internationally; professional registration encouraged.

Responsibilities

• Design and develop HV and EHV cable systems for power transmission and distribution projects.
• Perform cable studies and thermal analyses using CYMCAP.
• Produce engineering deliverables, specifications, and design documentation.
• Support HVAC and HVDC solutions for onshore, offshore, and interconnector projects.
• Conduct route, site, and installation assessments; consider technical, environmental, and constructability factors.
• Ensure designs comply with standards, client specs, safety, and environmental requirements.
• Collaborate with project managers, construction teams, manufacturers, contractors, and clients.
• Review design changes and provide technical support through manufacturing, installation, testing, and commissioning.
• Participate in design reviews, audits, and QA processes; stay updated on cable technologies.
