Job summary

National Grid, the UK’s electricity transmission leader, seeks a mechanically biased engineer to maintain and overhaul critical substation equipment. The role is outdoors, sometimes at height, with duties ranging from stripping components to installing refurbished gear.

Based in Southampton/Bournemouth/Portsmouth corridor, you’ll work 37 hours weekly with paid overtime, a company vehicle from home to work, and a strong pension plan. Training at the Eakring Centre supports your growth.

Qualifications

• Recognised apprenticeship in Engineering/Mechanical or NVQ/Level 3 in Engineering/Mechanical with related fitting experience.
• Strong mechanical/electrical maintenance, overhaul or installation experience.
• Experience stripping, rebuilding and repairing plant and equipment.
• Confidence using hand tools, power tools and torque tools.

Responsibilities

• Maintain, repair and overhaul electrical equipment in substations.
• Diagnose faults and carry out repairs.
• Replace worn components and install refurbished equipment.
• Support planned maintenance and emergency breakdown response.
• Perform routine inspections and condition monitoring.
