Job summary

National Grid plc is seeking a mechanically biased engineer to maintain critical electrical transmission substations in the Solent region, covering Southampton, Bournemouth, and Portsmouth. This hands-on role involves equipment maintenance, fault diagnosis and repair, and occasional standby work in outdoor environments.

You will work with mechanical and electrical systems, use hand and torque tools, and participate in training at our dedicated Eakring Training Centre.

Qualifications

• Recognised apprenticeship in Engineering/Mechanical with relevant industrial fitting experience.
• Strong mechanical/electrical maintenance, overhaul or installation experience.
• Experience stripping, rebuilding and repairing plant and equipment.

Responsibilities

• Stripping, inspecting and rebuilding mechanical components.
• Diagnosing faults and carrying out repairs.
• Replacing worn and ageing components including bearings, seals and moving parts.
• Installing new or refurbished equipment.
• Supporting planned maintenance and emergency breakdown response.
• Performing routine inspections and condition monitoring.
