Established in 1975, Luddon Construction Ltd is one of the country’s leading privately owned construction companies. We are a successful and reputable civil engineering, building and surfacing contractor based in Glasgow, with operations and projects now spanning throughout the UK. With over 500 employees, we are well placed to apply our experience to demanding markets and provide integrated and practical solutions to our clients.

The Role:

We are currently seeking an experienced HR & Recruitment Manager to manage and develop our HR and recruitment function. This is an important role within the business, supporting the attraction, appointment, onboarding and retention of a suitably competent workforce in line with company procedures, employment legislation and operational needs.

The successful candidate will lead recruitment and selection activity across the business, support managers with effective people management, oversee onboarding and associated HR administration, and help improve HR processes, systems and employee experience. The role will also work closely with Payroll to ensure accurate and timely sharing of employee information, including starters, leavers, contract changes, absence, annual leave and other employment-related updates.

This role would suit someone who is professional, organised and confident in working with managers across a multi-site operational business. The post holder will help ensure that recruitment and HR decisions are fair, consistent and aligned with the company’s values, competence requirements and longer‑term workforce needs.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Manage the recruitment process for vacancies across the business, from vacancy approval and advertising through to job offers and onboarding.
  • Work with recruiting managers to prepare, review and update job descriptions and person specifications so that requirements are accurate, role‑specific and relevant.
  • Provide advice and support to managers on recruitment practice, interview planning, candidate assessment and fair decision‑making.
  • Ensure vacancies are advertised through appropriate internal and external channels, including the company website, job boards, professional networking platforms and recruitment agencies where agreed.
  • Review applications, CVs and supporting information against agreed person specification criteria and provide suitable shortlists to recruiting managers.
  • Coordinate interviews and support managers in assessing candidates, including checking relevant information and clarifying any gaps or concerns.
  • Ensure recruitment activity is carried out in line with company procedures, equality and inclusion principles, data protection requirements and relevant employment legislation.
  • Oversee offer, contract issue request and onboarding documentation, ensuring all required pre‑employment checks are completed before employment starts.
  • Support onboarding arrangements for new employees, working with line managers, IT, Plant & Transport, HSEQ and Training to help new starters settle in and understand what is expected of them.
  • Work closely with Payroll to ensure accurate and timely sharing of employee information, including starters, leavers, contract changes, absence and annual leave.
  • Maintain accurate recruitment, onboarding and HR records, ensuring documentation is retained securely and is available for audit where required.
  • Monitor recruitment activity, related KPIs and candidate experience, identifying opportunities to improve efficiency, consistency and quality.
  • Ensure relevant health, safety and competence requirements are reflected in recruitment, onboarding and employee support processes.
  • Support the development and improvement of HR systems, templates, procedures and guidance.
  • Provide HR advice and support to managers and employees on employment matters, escalating complex or sensitive issues where required.
  • Support workforce planning, retention initiatives, HR projects, policy reviews and wider continuous improvement activity.
Person Specification:
  • CIPD qualification or equivalent HR/recruitment experience.
  • Experience in a HR, recruitment or people management role, ideally in a multi‑site or operational business.
  • Experience managing recruitment and selection processes from vacancy approval through to appointment and onboarding.
  • Good understanding of fair recruitment practice, equal opportunities, right to work checks, data protection and relevant employment legislation.
  • Ability to work with managers to develop job descriptions, person specifications and interview criteria.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the confidence to advise and influence managers professionally.
  • Strong organisational skills, with the ability to manage multiple vacancies, priorities and deadlines.
  • High level of accuracy, discretion and integrity when handling confidential employee and candidate information.
  • Competent user of Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, Outlook and Teams.
  • Full UK driving licence.
Desirable:
  • Associate CIPD membership or above.
  • Experience within construction, civil engineering or a similar multi‑site operational environment.
  • Experience using HR systems, applicant tracking systems or online recruitment platforms.
  • Experience supporting onboarding, employee relations or workforce planning.
