Job description

Dwelling Doctors is looking for an experienced, hands-on HR & Recruitment Manager to take ownership of our day-to-day HR processes, internal recruitment, employee onboarding and workforce compliance.

We need someone who has dealt with real employee relations matters, can manage recruitment from start to finish and will keep accurate records as the business grows. You will work closely with the senior management team and managers across our branches, taking a practical, fair and consistent approach to people matters.

This is a full-time, office-based role at our Waltham Abbey head office. It is not a work-from-home or hybrid position. Occasional travel to our other branch locations may be required.

Key responsibilities - HR and employee relations
  • Manage day-to-day HR processes, including probation reviews, absence, return-to-work meetings, conduct and performance concerns
  • Coordinate investigations, disciplinary and grievance processes, including meeting arrangements, notes, letters and case records
  • Work with managers to gather the information and decisions needed to progress employee matters fairly and promptly
  • Maintain accurate, confidential employee records and HR documentation
  • Support employee retention, engagement and communication
  • Work with external HR or legal advisers when specialist advice is needed
  • Help maintain and improve company policies, procedures and templates
Internal recruitment
  • Manage recruitment from vacancy approval through to offer and appointment
  • Agree role requirements with hiring managers and write clear job adverts
  • Screen applications, conduct initial interviews and coordinate further interviews
  • Assess candidates’ experience and suitability for the role and business
  • Manage candidate communication, offers and recruitment records
  • Build talent pipelines for operational, office-based and management roles
  • Improve the quality, consistency and speed of recruitment
  • Support workforce planning as the business grows
Onboarding and the employee lifecycle
  • Manage pre-employment checks, offer documentation, onboarding and inductions
  • Ensure new starters have a clear and organised introduction to the business
  • Track probation milestones and coordinate reviews
  • Maintain accurate records throughout the employee lifecycle, from joining through to leaving
  • Identify gaps in onboarding or employee processes and put practical improvements in place
Workforce compliance and reporting
  • Manage DBS checks, right-to-work checks and driving licence checks
  • Track training, qualifications and certification expiry dates
  • Ensure employee compliance records meet company and client requirements
  • Maintain organised trackers, files and HR systems
  • Support audits and produce regular HR, recruitment and compliance reports for management
What we’re looking for
  • Substantial hands-on experience in a generalist HR or employee relations role, including dealing with absence, performance and conduct matters
  • Experience managing the full recruitment process, from agreeing role requirements and writing adverts through to screening, interviewing, offers and appointment
  • A track record of recruiting for a range of roles, ideally including operational or field-based positions
  • Experience improving recruitment processes, candidate communication and the quality and speed of hiring
  • Experience managing employee onboarding and induction, including pre-employment checks, documentation and handover to managers
  • A good understanding of the employee lifecycle, including recruitment, probation, development, retention and leavers
  • Experience managing day-to-day people processes directly, working with managers where their input or decisions are needed
  • Experience coordinating investigations, disciplinary and grievance processes, with accurate written records and sound judgement about when to seek specialist advice
  • Strong organisational skills, attention to detail and the ability to manage competing priorities
  • The ability to handle confidential information sensitively and communicate professionally with employees and managers
  • Confidence using HR systems, spreadsheets and reporting tools
  • CIPD Level 5 or an equivalent HR qualification is desirable; strong, relevant practical experience will also be considered
  • Experience in construction, housing, property services or facilities management would be advantageous
