Job summary

Based in Consett, Westray Recruitment Group is seeking a skilled machinist for precision components with a focus on horizontal boring. You will read engineering drawings, set and operate machines, and ensure parts meet high-quality standards for in-house and global supply.

The role requires a time-served background in machine shop work, CNC knowledge, and strong attention to detail. You’ll join a small, dedicated team committed to reliability and continuous improvement on a dayshift basis.

Qualifications

• Time-served machinist with hands-on shop experience.
• Experience with a variety of materials.
• Strong background in horizontal boring; Fagor controls advantageous.
• CNC machining knowledge.
• Able to read and interpret detailed engineering drawings.
• Committed to high-quality work with strong attention to detail.
• Reliable, punctual and team-oriented.

Responsibilities

• Manufacture precision components from engineering drawings using various machining methods with a focus on horizontal boring.
• Operate and set machinery to produce high-quality parts for in-house assemblies and global customer supply.
• Meet tight deadlines while maintaining accuracy and consistency.
• Ensure work meets quality standards and company/British Standards procedures.
• Interpret metric and imperial measurements confidently.
• Support a flexible workshop environment handling diverse components and materials.
• Collaborate with a small, skilled team to achieve production targets and maintain workflow.
• Contribute to continuous improvement and participate in team activities.

• £20 per hour (£38,480 per annum) – includes shift allowance
• 37 hours per week
• 2 shift rotation
• Day Shift - Mon to Thu 06:00-14:00 Fri 06:00-13:30
• Back Shift - Mon to Wed 13:45-23:45 Thu 13:45-22:45
• (During probation - Mon to Thu 07:30-16:00 Fri 07:00-12:30)

THE ROLE

• Manufacture precision components from engineering drawings using a range of machining methods, with a strong focus on horizontal boring
• Operate and set machinery to produce high-quality parts for both in-house assemblies and global customer supply
• Work to tight deadlines while maintaining accuracy and consistency
• Ensure all work meets required quality standards and aligns with company procedures and British Standards
• Interpret and work confidently with both metric and imperial measurements
• Contribute to a flexible workshop environment handling a wide variety of components and materials
• Collaborate closely with a small, skilled team to achieve production targets and maintain workflow efficiency
• Support continuous improvement and take part in team-based or cross-functional activities

THE PERSON

• Knowledge of Horizontal Borer Giddings and Lewis, A130B with Fagor Controls is advantageous
• Time-served machinist with solid, hands-on experience in a machine shop environment
• Proven experience working with a variety of materials
• Strong background in horizontal boring; experience with Fagor controls is advantageous
• CNC machining knowledge or experience
• Able to read and interpret detailed engineering drawings accurately
• Committed to producing work to a high standard with strong attention to detail
• Reliable, punctual, and able to manage workload effectively to meet deadlines
• Team-oriented with a proactive and flexible approach to work
