At Salvation Army Homes, we are dedicated to providing comprehensive, high-quality housing services, support, and resettlement for people who have recently experienced homelessness and are in need of support and accommodation.

Mildmay House aims to enable the growth of individuals' strengths and talents, supporting them to develop skills and resources to transform their lives, overcoming barriers such as alcohol and drug dependencies, and enabling independent living.

The Support Worker will engage creatively with people who have multiple and challenging complex needs, including long-term homelessness, rough sleeping, substance use, and mental illness, to identify and foster their strengths and talents, working with them to develop skills and resources for independent living.

About The Role

This is a full-time role working on a rota basis—generally a week of day shifts, a week of night shifts, and working every other weekend.

What you will be doing:

  1. Delivering high-quality, effective, timely, and person-centred assessments for clients to identify and prioritise needs.
  2. Providing support to clients for personal care needs, e.g., personal hygiene.
  3. Developing services aimed at reducing drug and alcohol admissions to emergency services.
  4. Proactively addressing deterioration in physical and emotional well-being, isolation, and exclusion.
  5. Ensuring the accommodation and grounds are maintained to a high standard through communication and practical means, including assisting with room clearing, reporting repairs, and maintaining equipment.

About the Service:

Mildmay House is a 47-bed supported accommodation service for single homeless males and females aged 16 and above, from diverse backgrounds including relationship breakdowns, rough sleeping, mental health issues, and substance use. We strive to provide a warm, respectful, and supportive environment where clients feel at home from day one. Our staff support and encourage clients throughout their journey towards independent living.

What our Staff Say: I love working at Mildmay House because there is never a dull moment. The relationships developed with clients are vital in supporting us to truly transform lives.

About You

Support Workers should naturally embody Salvation Army Homes' values—loving your work, helping people thrive, and always finding effective ways to support clients. You will need to:

  1. Have experience supporting vulnerable people or groups.
  2. Experience working with individuals who have experienced long-term homelessness, rough sleeping, substance use, and mental health issues (desirable).
  3. Be confident and capable in communication, unphased by difficult situations.
  4. Build trusting, professional relationships with resilience.
  5. Take an asset-based approach to empower individuals to develop their skills, strengths, and talents.
  6. Possess good knowledge or experience of working with homeless or vulnerable populations.
  7. Understand or be willing to learn about community resources and organisations that can assist clients.
  8. Be flexible with working hours to accommodate a rota aligned with service and team needs.

Benefits of working as a Support Worker:

  • 26 days annual leave, increasing to 31 days.
  • £100 bonus at start, £250 after 6 months, and another £250 after 12 months of service.
  • An extra day off on your birthday.
  • High Street discount scheme for savings both online and in-store.
  • Pension scheme with life assurance.
  • Discounted private medical insurance.
  • Loans for financial emergencies.
  • Occupational Sick Pay.
  • Comprehensive induction and role-specific training.
  • Long service awards from 2.5 years of service.
  • Support for career development and learning.
