Job summary

The Wellcome Sanger Institute’s Vento group is seeking a highly motivated staff scientist to lead histology and spatial transcriptomics wet lab work on a fixed-term basis.

You will supervise sample preparation, embedding, sectioning, and image analysis, coordinate with the team, and help shape projects across Institute-wide initiatives. The role includes opportunities to publish and train students.

Qualifications

• PhD in Biology, Biomedical, or interdisciplinary field.
• Expertise in histology and histopathology.
• Expertise in image analysis tools and approaches.
• Experience delivering training.
• Proven track record leading projects with publications and meetings.
• Ability to test, implement and troubleshoot new analysis approaches.
• Excellent communication skills.
• Proven ability to work effectively within a team.
• Self-motivated, independent and organized.
• Good attention to detail and record keeping for sample and experimental tracking.
• An ability to lead and inspire others to achieve scientific projects.

Responsibilities

• Lead daily lab work for histology and spatial transcriptomics pipelines.
• Coordinate with the Vento team and provide histological expertise across Institute projects.
• Provide image analysis using advanced tools and set project targets.
• Train team members in sample processing methods including fixation, embedding, and sectioning.
• Review and optimise SOPs and risk assessments.
• Contribute to supervision and scientific direction of PhD students and postdocs.
• Contribute to the publication of data in relevant scientific journals.
