Job summary

Wellcome Sanger Institute is seeking a staff scientist to lead histology and spatial transcriptomics wet lab work on a fixed-term basis. You will oversee sample preparation, coordinate with the Vento group, and contribute to image analysis and SOP improvements.

You will train others, supervise PhD students and postdocs, and contribute to publications while maintaining high standards of record-keeping and experimental integrity.

Qualifications

• PhD in Biology, Biomedical, or an interdisciplinary field (e.g. Clinical Research, Biotechnology).
• Expertise in histology and histopathology.
• Expertise in image analysis tools and approaches.
• Experience delivering training.
• Experience leading projects with publications or meetings in the field.
• Excellent communication skills.
• Proven ability to work effectively within a team.
• Self-motivated, independent and organised; strong record-keeping.

Responsibilities

• Lead daily laboratory work for histology and spatial transcriptomics pipelines.
• Coordinate with the Vento team; provide histological expertise across Institute-wide projects.
• Provide image analysis using advanced tools and set project targets.
• Train team members in sample processing methods and SOPs; review risk assessments.
• Supervise and guide PhD students and postdocs; contribute to publications.
