Job summary

Northumberland County Council is seeking an HGV-licensed driver to operate and maintain high- and mid-range highways sweepers across designated routes in Northumberland. The role involves daily safety checks, dust control, waste disposal, and ongoing site protection through temporary traffic measures.

You will work across multiple sites with limited supervision, following driving legislation and road-safety requirements.

Qualifications

• An HGV licence is required.
• Ability to work unsupervised between sites.
• Knowledge of the legislation and regulations relating to driving.

Responsibilities

• Vehicle Operation: Drive and manage truck-mounted or compact sweeping vehicles along designated routes.
• Pre-Shift Checks: Conduct daily walk-around and mechanical safety checks, ensuring the vehicle is roadworthy.
• Brush & Suction Control: Adjust equipment to gather dirt and litter.
• Dust & Environmental Management: Operate spray jets to suppress dust.
• Waste & Debris Disposal: Empty hoppers and transport arisings to disposal facilities, following regs.
• Site and Traffic Safety: Set up traffic management including cones, barriers, lights.
• Excavation and Reinstatement: Dig holes safely and backfill surfaces.
• Pothole and Surface Repairs: Patch surfaces as directed.
• Kerbing and Paving: Lift/set kerbs and pave as needed.
• Drainage Maintenance: Clear drains and install/repair pipes.
• Street Furniture and Ironwork: Adjust signs, bollards, fencing.
• Tool and Plant Support: Prepare and operate tools and small plant.
