Job summary

Barnet Council in London seeks a Development Control Engineer to assess highway impacts of planning proposals and provide technical approvals under Sections 38 and 278. The role involves daily site involvement, negotiations, and guidance to developers on highway works.

You will inspect sites, monitor schemes, and support adoption of new infrastructure, collaborating with internal teams, consultants, and residents to deliver safe, sustainable highway networks for the borough.

Qualifications

• Qualification to ONC/HNC level, ideally degree in Civil/Highways/Transportation.
• Two years' post-graduate highways/transportation experience.
• Experience managing Section 38/278 schemes and highway adoption.
• Strong knowledge of highways legislation, policies and practices.
• Experience supervising highway works and contractors with compliance.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder management with client focus.

Responsibilities

• Assess and manage highway impacts of development proposals.
• Process Section 38/278 applications and related provisions.
• Provide technical approvals, audits, and engineering guidance to developers.
• Oversee site inspections and monitor highway works and contractors.
• Represent the Highway Authority at meetings and maintain project records.
