Job summary

Balfour Beatty plc is seeking a Highways Maintenance Operative for our UKCS Scotland team based in Dalston, Carlisle. The role focuses on maintaining the local highway network through repairs, drainage work and minor civil tasks in outdoor conditions.

You will support winter maintenance and emergency response, with a strong emphasis on health and safety, teamwork and customer service for the public.

Qualifications

• A valid HGV Category C licence and Driver CPC required for site operations.
• Experience in highway maintenance is essential; ability to work in a team and cover flexible hours.

Responsibilities

• Complete highway repairs and general maintenance activities.
• Carry out minor civil engineering works including kerbing and drainage installation.
• Cleansing and jetting of highway drainage systems and road gullies.
• Support winter maintenance by driving an HGV gritter during winter months.
• Install and maintain traffic management systems and support emergency response.
• Complete and submit operational paperwork; participate in risk assessments and health & safety procedures.
• Contribute feedback for continuous improvement and participate in reviews.

Balfour Beatty has an exciting opportunity for a Highways Maintenance Operative to join our UKCS Scotland team, based in Dalston, Carlisle. You will help maintain and improve the local highway network by completing a range of highway repairs, minor civil engineering works and drainage activities. You will also support winter maintenance and emergency response operations, helping to keep the network safe and operational throughout the year. This is a practical, outdoor role requiring a strong commitment to health and safety, teamwork and delivering a respectful service to the public. What you'll be doing

As a Highways Maintenance Operative, Your Responsibilities Will Include

• Completing highway repairs and general maintenance activities
• Carrying out minor civil engineering works, including kerbing and drainage installation
• Cleansing and jetting highway drainage systems and road gullies
• Supporting winter maintenance operations by driving an HGV gritter during the winter months
• Installing and maintaining traffic management systems
• Supporting the emergency response team when required
• Completing point-of-work risk assessments for all activities
• Following all health and safety policies and procedures
• Reporting defects involving plant, equipment or damaged highway infrastructure
• Completing and submitting the required operational paperwork
• Contributing ideas, feedback and best practice to support continuous improvement
• Participating in performance and personal development reviews
• Treating members of the public respectfully and professionally at all times

Who we're looking for

The Successful Candidate Will Have

• A valid HGV Category C licence, also known as Class 2
• A valid Driver Certificate of Professional Competence
• Previous experience working within a highway maintenance environment
• The ability to work effectively as part of a team
• Flexibility to work outside normal hours and participate in paid standby arrangements when required

The Following Qualifications Or Competencies Would Be Advantageous

• Telehandler qualification
• Tracked excavator below 5 tonnes or JCB 3CX qualification
• Traffic Management Sector Scheme 12D T1/T2 training
• Manual handling competency
