Job summary

Balfour Beatty plc is seeking a Site Based Plant Fitter to service and repair large diesel-powered OHL plant across Scotland. You will work on active construction sites, performing maintenance, fault diagnosis and repairs to keep equipment safe and available.

This hands-on role requires traveling between sites, occasional workshop time, and a commitment to safety and quality workmanship. You will join the Plant & Fleet team and contribute to proactive maintenance, records, and collaboration with

Qualifications

  • Completed a recognised plant apprenticeship or hold a mechanical/electrical qualification.
  • Experience servicing and maintaining large diesel-powered plant, including hydraulic and electrical systems.
  • Strong fault-finding and diagnostic skills.

Responsibilities

  • Carrying out servicing, maintenance, inspections, and repairs on specialist OHL plant and equipment.
  • Diagnosing and resolving hydraulic, electrical, and mechanical faults on large diesel-driven plant.

About the role

Balfour Beatty Asset & Technology Solutions is looking for a skilled and motivated Site Based Plant Fitter to join our team, supporting projects across Scotland. This is a hands‑on role working predominantly on operational sites, ensuring our specialist overhead line (OHL) plant and equipment remains safe, compliant, and fully operational.

As a key member of our Plant & Fleet team, you will play an important role in maintaining a fleet of specialist plant and equipment that supports major infrastructure projects. The position offers a varied and rewarding workload, combining planned maintenance, reactive repairs, breakdown support, and fault diagnosis across a range of large diesel-powered machinery.

This role is primarily site-based and will involve travel throughout Scotland, with occasional attendance at our Shotts workshop when operational requirements dictate.

What you'll be doing
  • Carrying out servicing, maintenance, inspections, and repairs on specialist OHL plant and associated equipment.
  • Diagnosing and resolving hydraulic, electrical, and mechanical faults on large diesel‑driven plant.
  • Delivering both planned preventative maintenance and reactive breakdown support.
  • Ensuring all plant and equipment is maintained in accordance with manufacturer specifications, statutory requirements, and company standards.
  • Accurately completing maintenance records and documentation using electronic systems.
  • Managing and recording spare parts usage and identifying replacement requirements.
  • Supporting workshop activities and assisting colleagues with maintenance tasks when required.
  • Maintaining a safe, clean, and organised working environment at all times.
  • Working closely with operational teams, customers, and supply chain partners to ensure plant availability and minimise downtime.
  • Supporting continuous improvement initiatives and contributing to positive safety performance.
  • Participating in overtime, weekend working, and occasional periods away from home when required to support project delivery.
Who we're looking for

We're seeking an experienced plant maintenance professional who enjoys working in a fast‑paced operational environment and takes pride in delivering high standards of workmanship and customer service.

Essential Requirements
  • Completed a recognised plant apprenticeship or hold a relevant mechanical or electrical qualification.
  • Experience servicing and maintaining large diesel‑powered plant, including hydraulic and electrical systems.
  • Strong fault‑finding and diagnostic skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret hydraulic schematics and electrical wiring diagrams.
  • Experience working within busy site‑based environments.
  • Good understanding of workplace health, safety, and environmental requirements.
  • Competent IT skills, including the use of Microsoft Office applications.
  • Full UK driving licence.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to build effective working relationships.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Flexible approach to travel, overtime, weekend working, and staying away from home when required.
Desirable Requirements
  • Experience maintaining specialist plant used within the overhead line or power transmission industry.
  • Forklift and telehandler certification.
  • Welding qualification.
  • IOSH or other recognised safety qualification, or willingness to work towards one.
  • EUSR SHEA Power qualification.
