Job overview

This is a lead physiotherapy role in the Merton Community Neuro Rehabilitation Team. You will be providing highly specialised neuro physiotherapy to patients referred to the Merton Neuro Rehabilitation Team and will be responsible for the clinical supervision and support of the physiotherapists within the team.

You will also provide clinical expertise for the team and for any patients with neurological conditions. You will be responsible for and act as the lead clinician for the learning and development of physiotherapists and multidisciplinary staff, providing clinical support and guidance and assist in the development of the Merton Neuro Physiotherapy service.

The successful candidate will provide highly specialised Physiotherapy to patients with a confirmed neurological diagnosis, working autonomously and without direct supervision, and being accountable for their own professional actions. You will provide highly specialised Physiotherapy advice in relation to the care of patients who have a range of psycho-social, physical, and emotional problems including terminal illness, working in a community setting.

Main duties of the job
  • Clinical Expertise and Management of a Clinical Caseload
  • To be responsible for the development, implementation, and delivery of Physiotherapy as a specialist clinician, including assessment, treatment planning and carrying out treatment of own client caseload
  • To develop and implement specialist treatment programmes and initiate discharge planning. To be highly skilled in assessing and interpreting a range of complex factors relating to the patient’s condition, including diagnosis and prognosis.
  • · To communicate complex assessment and treatment plans with patients and carers, dealing sensitively with distressing or emotional circumstances and being realistic about client’s expectations
  • To liaise and establish communication networks with the multidisciplinary teams, external voluntary, and statutory organisations as appropriate
  • To assess, recommend and where appropriate provide and fit a range of medical devices and / or equipment, to facilitate patient’s rehabilitation

Qualifications
  • Degree in Physiotherapy
  • Health Professions Council Registration
  • Educated to Masters level in field relevant to the role or equivalent combination of post graduate education, courses and experience in neuro physiotherapy
  • Membership of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy
  • Membership of Special Interest Group e.g. ACPIN
Experience
  • Experience working as a Band 6 / Band 7 Specialist Neuro Physiotherapist in a Community Neuro Rehabilitation Team or Early Supported Discharge (Stroke) Team
  • Experience working within a Multi-Disciplinary Team
  • Completion of yearly appraisals
  • Experience of Clinical Teaching
  • Staff and Student Supervision
  • Experience of recruitment and selection
  • Clinical leadership of a small team of Physiotherapists
  • Well-rounded rotational experience within neuro speciality e.g. Neurosurgery, General Neurology, Stroke, Specialist Neuro-Rehabilitation, Specialist Services
  • Knowledge and experience with research and audit
  • Experience of operational management
Skills
  • Advanced communication and report writing skills, in both verbal and written format
  • Basic IT/ word processing skills
  • EMIS clinical system experience
