Job summary

Herons’ Moor Academy is seeking a Higher Level Teaching Assistant to work with Years 1–5, providing class support and PPA cover under supervision.

The role involves planning and delivering learning activities, supporting students to access the curriculum and achieve their potential, and working with SENCO and staff. 32.5 hours per week, term-time only plus INSET days; permanent with a start date of 2 November 2026.

  • Experience as a skilled TA/HLTA with ability to lead small-group work.

Job Title: Higher Level Teaching Assistant

Actual Annual Salary: £24,827 - £27,085 Based on hours and working weeks.

Full Time Equivalent Salary: £33,009 - £36,011 (CLF Grade D) Based on Full Time hours, All year round.

Contract Type: Permanent

Hours: Part-Time, 32.5 hours per week Term Time Only (plus INSET days)

Additional role info: Working Pattern - Monday to Friday, 6.5 hours per day

Provisional Start Date: 2 November 2026, pending the completion of pre-employment checks

Herons’ Moor Academy is seeking a Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) to complement the work of teachers and play a key role in supporting students’ academic, personal and social development. This role will support Years 1-5 with a mixture of class support and PPA cover.

The successful candidate will take responsibility for planning and delivering agreed learning activities under an appropriate system of supervision. This may include leading lessons for individuals, small groups or whole classes within an agreed framework, as well as providing targeted support for specific students or groups.

Working closely with SENCO, class teachers and SLT, the HLTA will support students to access the curriculum, engage positively with their learning and achieve their full potential. The role requires the use of effective strategies and approaches informed by significant experience, specialist knowledge and professional expertise.

The HLTA will make a measurable contribution to student attainment, progress and social and emotional wellbeing, with a wider impact on the learning environment and outcomes of students. They will also contribute to the development of colleagues by supporting, coaching and sharing effective practice.

This is a key role for an experienced practitioner who can work confidently with students across a range of needs, take initiative and deliver high-quality learning and support with a clear focus on positive outcomes.

About you:
  • an understanding of classroom roles and responsibilities and how HLTAs support students in their learning.
  • demonstrable, recent experience working as a highly effective/ skilled Teaching Assistant, HLTA or a role of equivalent skill level and requirement
  • gained HLTA status, or equivalent qualification, or experience to demonstrate consistent ability to operate at this level.
  • good literacy and numeracy competency (evidenced by GCSE Maths and English at grade C or above, equivalent qualifications or experience).
  • the ability to engage students and manage behaviour on a one to one or small group basis.
  • strong interpersonal skills, in particular with the ability to demonstrate empathy and active listening.
  • good planning and organisational skills, specifically with regard to learning activities and support materials.
