Job summary

J. Dickinson & Sons in Horwich is seeking an experienced HGV Workshop Manager to maintain, repair and inspect our growing fleet.

You will lead the workshop team, plan maintenance, minimise downtime and ensure safety, compliance and cost‑effective repairs. The role requires an HGV repair qualification or substantial experience, a Category C licence and proven leadership in a time‑critical environment.

Qualifications

• Qualified in HGV repair and maintenance or equivalent experience.
• Category C driving licence.
• Extensive experience managing HGV repairs and maintenance.
• Strong leadership with line management experience.
• Knowledge of workshop health and safety.
• Understanding of Operator Licence and DVSA requirements.
• Ability to work in a time‑critical environment with vehicle availability.
• Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
• Commercially aware with repair methods, time and cost decisions.
• Calm, organized and decisive under pressure.

Responsibilities

• Develop and implement an effective maintenance plan for fleet vehicles and trailers.
• Prioritise repairs and maintenance by safety, cost, and operations.
• Manage planned preventative maintenance and repairs to minimise downtime.
• Create a prioritised schedule for inspections, servicing and MOT preparation.
• Ensure fleet compliance with operator licence and DVSA requirements.
• Lead and develop the HGV Workshop team to improve processes and efficiency.
• Coordinate with Transport Manager and Planning to match availability.
• Communicate planned maintenance and downtime in operational planning.
• Respond to urgent repairs and breakdowns in a time‑critical environment.
• Foster proactive maintenance culture rather than reactive repairs.
