Job summary

Volvo Trucks in Reading is seeking an experienced HGV Technician. Salary up to £23 per hour with a £2,000 signing bonus and overtime paid at time and a half. Rotating shifts from early morning to late evening, with strong training opportunities at Reading’s dedicated training school.

The role includes ongoing development in electrics, EV systems, and Volvo Bronze/ Silver/ Gold accreditation, plus pension and generous annual leave. Applicants should bring NVQ Level 3 and a full UK driving licence.

Qualifications

• NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent) in Heavy Vehicle Maintenance & Repair.
• Previous experience working as an HGV Technician.
• Full UK driving licence; HGV licence preferred.

Responsibilities

• Carry out repairs to manufacturer procedures and Volvo standards.
• Diagnose faults and perform tests to verify repairs.
• Road test vehicles if licensed to do so.
• Work with Parts Team to ensure correct parts are fitted.
• Complete service sheets and workshop documentation.
• Assist with maintaining workshop cleanliness and safety.

Who Are You

We're looking for technicians who take pride in their work and want to continue developing their skills.

You'll Ideally Have

• NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent) in Heavy Vehicle Maintenance & Repair
• Previous experience working as an HGV Technician
• Strong diagnostic and problem-solving skills
• A proactive approach and commitment to safety and customer service
• A full UK driving licence
• An HGV licence is preferred but not essential
• Volvo experience is advantageous but not essential

We welcome applications from professionals with experience across heavy vehicle maintenance and repair. If you have previously worked as an HGV Technician, HGV Mechanic, Heavy Goods Vehicle Mechanic, or Commercial Vehicle Technician, your skills are highly relevant to this role. We also value transferable expertise from allied industries; candidates with backgrounds as a PSV Technician, PCV Mechanic, Bus and Coach Technician, or a Heavy Plant Mechanic / Plant Technician are strongly encouraged to apply, as full product training on our modern fleet will be provided.

What Will You Be Doing

• Ensure repairs are carried out according to manufacturer’s procedures, safely and responsibly
• Ensure repairs are carried out in accordance with Volvo Standard Times using Volvo Special Tools where appropriate
• Assist in the fault diagnosis process
• Comply with warranty procedures during repairs and warranty material on completion of each repair
• Work with the Parts Team to ensure the correct replacement parts are fitted
• Road test vehicles when required (if you hold an HGV licence)
• Assist with roadside breakdowns
• Ensure company time recording procedures are complied with, and that job cards are completed accurately
• Ensure service sheets are completed as per Volvo instructions
• Ensure all vehicle defects are reported to workshop controllers
• Keep all workshop facilities, equipment and tools clean, tidy and well maintained
• Wear personal protective equipment when appropriate
• Support the development of young trainees and apprentices
