Main Duties of the Job

As a Healthcare Support Worker (HCSW), you’ll be part of a dedicated team providing essential care to patients in various settings. This role is suitable for those who are organised, adaptable, and empathetic. Whether experienced or new to healthcare, our tailored training will support your development.

You will work closely with registered healthcare professionals to deliver compassionate, person-centred care, supporting patients in environments such as adult and child wards, outpatient areas, and more. You will take all necessary steps to safeguard patients’ welfare, safety, and security, making a positive impact on their well-being daily.

This role requires effective communication, teamwork, and high standards. Applicants must be at least 18 years old, willing to work a minimum of 23 hours per week, including long days, nights, weekends, and bank holidays.

Job Description

The Healthcare Support Worker (HCSW) is a vital part of the multidisciplinary team, assisting in delivering high-quality, individualised care under the supervision of registered nurses, practitioners, and other healthcare professionals.

  • Assist patients with activities of daily living, including feeding, bathing, and repositioning, under supervision.
  • Help with bed making, cleaning, errands, and general duties appropriate to the clinical setting.
  • Respect patient privacy and dignity, communicate effectively, and deliver person-centred care, considering communication barriers.
  • Collect, label, and send specimens as requested, advising the team accordingly.
  • Record patient property and valuables appropriately.
  • Share responsibility for housekeeping, stock control, and maintaining a safe, clean environment.
  • Input data into patient records, including fluid balance and nutrition.
  • Participate in formal and informal patient handovers.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential care documentation.
  • Use equipment safely, including hoists, wheelchairs, mattresses, and beds.
  • Prepare and manage the healthcare environment and equipment.
  • Perform moving and handling tasks safely.
  • Communicate regularly with patients, families, and the multidisciplinary team in a caring and professional manner.
  • Develop good relationships with patients, staff, visitors, and other departments.
  • Assist with induction of new staff and complete core competencies, including the care certificate within 3-6 months.
  • Meet the minimum requirements: secondary education, ability to move and handle patients, empathy, patience, dependability, and ability to work within role guidelines.
  • Previous experience in acute hospital settings, volunteering, teaching assistance, or nursing homes is desirable.
  • Attain NVQ level 3 in care or equivalent experience, GCSE/Functional Skills Level 1 in English & Maths, basic IT skills, and ECG placement training.
