Job summary

The Thornbury Hospital in Sheffield, part of Circle Health Group, seeks a Healthcare Assistant for bank shifts to support wards on an as-and-when-required basis. You will supplement staffing during busy periods and cover for annual leave or absence.

Key duties include assisting with personal care, feeding, observations and basic clinical tasks, while maintaining patient comfort and safety within a collaborative team environment.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Assist patients with hygiene, mobility and daily activities.
• Support eating and hydration, document intake as appropriate.
• Provide comfort and emotional support to patients and relatives.
• Record routine observations (BP, pulse, temp, SpO2, glucose) after training.
• Assist with basic clinical tasks and mobility aids.
• Prepare and maintain clinical areas and equipment.
• Collaborate with nurses, doctors, therapists and admin teams.

Healthcare Assistant (Bank) The Thornbury Hospital Bank Shifts Salary: Up to £12.82 per hour

The Thornbury Hospital in Sheffield is part of Circle Health Group, Britain's leading provider of independent healthcare with a nationwide network of hospitals & clinics, performing more complex surgery than any other private healthcare provider in the country. We have an opportunity for a Healthcare Assistant to join their team of staff in the Wards department. This is a bank role working on an “as and when required” basis, you will be required to supplement staffing levels during busy periods and provide cover for existing staff in times of annual leave or absence.

Duties of this role include:

• Assist patients with personal hygiene, washing, dressing, toileting, oral care, and mobility needs, respecting their preferences and dignity.
• Help patients with eating, drinking, and nutritional support, including documenting intake where appropriate.
• Provide comfort and emotional support to patients and relatives, creating a caring and safe environment.
• Carry out and accurately record routine observations such as blood pressure, pulse, respiratory rate, temperature, oxygen saturation, and blood glucose levels (after appropriate training).
• Support basic clinical procedures, including wound care setup, assisting with catheter care, pressure area prevention, and mobility aids.
• Prepare and maintain clinical areas, including trolleys, beds, and equipment in readiness for patient use.
• Work collaboratively with nurses, doctors, therapists, and admin teams to support safe and efficient patient care.

Applicants should meet the following criteria:

• Previous experience in a care or health support role (hospital, care home, community, or domiciliary).
• Good communication and interpersonal skills with a caring, compassionate attitude.
• Ability to follow instructions and elevate concerns appropriately.
• Basic literacy, numeracy, and IT skills.
• Physically able to undertake duties including moving and handling tasks.
• NVQ Level 2 or 3 in Health and Social Care (or equivalent qualification) desirable.
