Job description

Independent Health Group (IHG) has an opportunity for an experienced Health Care Assistant to join our friendly surgical team in Swindon.

This is a full-time role, Monday to Friday, based at Guildford Avenue in Swindon. There may also be some time spent with our team in Chippenham, based at Hathaway Medical Centre.

In addition to a competitive salary, IHG offers a generous pension contribution of 6% of your earnings. We offer 25 days of annual leave, a day off for your birthday (if it falls on a working day), bank holidays, and the option to buy up to 2 additional weeks of annual leave.

This role is also open to part-time applicants, who are encouraged to apply.

Main duties of the job

The Health Care Assistant (HCA) supports the Theatre Team by undertaking circulating duties in the operating theatre and supporting patients during the perioperative phase, delivering high standards of individualised patient care under supervision. Effective, empathic communication with patients and relatives is essential. The HCA also assists in outpatient clinics.

Job responsibilities

Main tasks and responsibilities:

  • Effective communication with patients and the multidisciplinary team.
  • Undertaking theatre competencies and supporting circulating duties.
  • Working within your scope of practice and training.
  • Performing routine circulating tasks for various surgical procedures.
  • Preparing sterile equipment and ensuring sterility confirmation.
  • Maintaining accurate clinical records using SystmOne.
  • Assisting in patient positioning and transfers.
  • Adhering to IHG policies and procedures.
  • Supporting the safe use of medical equipment.
  • Participating in induction and ongoing training of staff.
  • Supporting colleagues and working according to instructions and approved procedures.

Providing high-quality care by:

  • Setting up and packing away clinical rooms.
  • Adhering to hand hygiene and infection prevention policies.
  • Attending to patients' physical comfort.
  • Performing and reporting clinical observations.
  • Maintaining a clean and safe work environment.
  • Managing stock levels and ordering supplies.
  • Taking responsibility for personal development.
  • Reporting incidents and safeguarding concerns.
  • Supporting outpatient clinics.
Person Specification
Knowledge and Skills
  • Understanding factors influencing good clinical care.
  • Effective communication and patient reassurance skills.
  • Teamwork and ability to work independently.
  • Maintaining accurate patient records.
  • Basic computer skills, including clinical systems like System One.
Qualifications
  • Broad education demonstrating communication skills.
  • Commitment to ongoing personal development.
  • NVQ Level 2 in Health and Social Care / Care Certificate or willingness to train.
Experience
  • Experience working directly with patients or service users.
  • Experience in a perioperative setting preferred.

This role requires a DBS check due to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975.

Salary: £23,979.90 per year plus a 5% discretionary annual bonus.
