Job summary

Layton Medical Centre in Lancashire is seeking an experienced Healthcare Assistant for a 6-month fixed-term maternity cover starting August 2026. The role is 25 hours per week, 8am to 1pm, Monday to Friday, within a supportive GP practice.

You will conduct ECGs and blood pressure checks, support practice nurses with chronic disease reviews, manage patient records in EMIS, and provide lifestyle and health advice. NVQ2/3 and phlebotomy/ECG experience essential.

Qualifications

  • Experience in phlebotomy is essential.
  • Experience in conducting ECGs.
  • IT literacy with EMIS and safeguarding protocols.
  • NVQ Level 2 or 3 in Health and Social Care or equivalent.
  • Previous GP surgery HCA experience is advantageous.

Responsibilities

  • Support the practice team with clinical and admin tasks.
  • Conduct ECGs and blood pressure monitoring.
  • Perform NHS Health Checks and Enhanced Health Checks.
  • Assist with chronic disease reviews (diabetes, AF, hypertension).
  • Measure height, weight, BMI; update patient records accurately in EMIS.
  • Process specimens and conduct basic diagnostic tests.
  • Provide lifestyle advice (smoking cessation, weight management).

Job description

We are seeking an experienced and motivatedHealthcare Assistant to join our friendly and supportive GP practice teamon a 6-month fixed-term maternity cover contract to start August 2026.

25 hours a week - 8am -1pm, Monday - Friday

This is an excellent opportunity for a skilled HCA who is confident indelivering high-quality patient care within a primary care setting. Thesuccessful candidate will play a key role in supporting the clinical team andensuring patients receive efficient and professional care.

Main duties of the job

As a Healthcare Assistant, you will support the practice team in delivering a range of clinical and administrative tasks, including but not limited to:

Conducting ECGs and blood pressure monitoring.

Performing NHS Health Checks and Enhanced Health checks

Supporting the Practice Nurses with long-term condition management, including diabetes, AF, and hypertension obs reviews.

Carrying out height, weight, and BMI measurements.

Processing specimens (urine, swabs) and conducting basic diagnostic tests.

Providing lifestyle advice to patients, including smoking cessation and weight management.

Updating and maintaining patient records accurately in the clinical system.

Job responsibilities

As a Healthcare Assistant, you will play a vital role in supporting the clinical team by:

Delivering safe and effective patient care under the supervision of practice nurses and GPs.

Conducting basic clinical procedures, such as venepuncture, ECGs, and health checks.

Assisting with the management of chronic disease reviews.

Supporting patients with lifestyle advice and preventative care.

Handling specimens and diagnostic testing as per clinical guidelines.

Maintaining infection control procedures and ensuring all clinical areas are well-stocked.

Accurately documenting clinical data and patient interactions in electronic records.

The role requires a proactive, caring, and professional approach to patient care, ensuring a high standard of service at all times.

Person Specification
Experience
  • Experience in phlebotomy - Essential
  • Experience in conducting ECG's
  • Strong communication and patient interaction skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • IT literacy, with experience using EMIS. Understanding of infection control, confidentiality, and safeguarding protolcols.
Qualifications
  • NVQ Level 2 or 3 in Health and Social Care (or equivalent qualification/experience).
  • Previous experience as a Healthcare Assistant in a GP surgery.
