Job description

In today’s world it’s important to work for a company that has a clear purpose, giving back to communities and supporting what is truly important in the world.

When considering a career move it’s vital to work for a business that is aligned to your values and goals, a place where you can belong. See what WSP stands for in 2024 and beyond…

You’ll be supporting our operational colleagues within the P&B business in the UK, particularly the P&B project teams who deliver major design and site-based projects.

The P&B business has a diverse and rapidly growing portfolio of projects involving everything from:

  • structural, mechanical, electrical, fire, digital, industrial, architectural and numerous other designs;
  • surveys, inspections and other work on many different types of sites in many different environments;
  • construction site management.

YOUR TEAM

Whilst you will primarily work with the P&B H&S Business Partner, you will also be supported by your counterparts in the wider Safety, Health and Wellbeing (SHW) team.

The P&B business currently employs over 1,000 people and aspires to develop and grow significantly in the coming years. As a design consultancy, whilst much of our work is desk-based, some colleagues work for long periods on site (or even manage construction sites), undertake higher-risk activities or travel to high-risk countries; all require dedicated and tailored health and safety support.

YOUR ROLE

The successful candidate will be responsible for supporting the P&B H&S Business Partner and providing H&S advice and support to our project teams and individual employees within P&B.

The role involves:

  • Liaising with the relevant project directors, managers and teams and the delivery of subsequent focussed and competent H&S advice and support.
  • Assisting the P&B H&S Business Partner in monitoring and reporting on key performance indicators (managing data, tracking and providing statistical analysis, and report compilation).
  • Cascading H&S communication to P&B employees (via senior leaders).
  • Delivery of H&S objectives.
  • Incident and accident investigation and managing data.
  • Assisting with the H&S elements of project bid support.
  • Assisting with the H&S assessment of prospective suppliers.
  • Internal H&S assurance auditing (CDM design and site).
  • Helping project leaders drive H&S culture and safety management system compliance within P&B projects.
  • Development and maintenance of assigned H&S policy documents and tools held in our safety management system.

The role requires the successful candidate to:

  • Be a vocal advocate of H&S and have the passion to seek out and drive forward H&S initiatives, independently or as part of a team, with a goal of continually improving H&S for our colleagues.
  • Follow a process of continual professional development; being aware of, and in touch with any changes to relevant UK H&S legislation, Approved Codes of Practice and industry best practice standards.

Work as part of the wider WSP community liaising with, as appropriate, our UK colleagues, P&B Business Unit / Discipline Stream Operational Teams, P&B Project Teams, and all other key stakeholders as appropriate.

We would love to hear from you if you have:

  • Experience in a H&S advisory or management role (experience in a construction or consulting company is preferred).
  • Hold a NEBOSH Health and Safety Diploma (or similar), or as a minimum a NEBOSH Construction Certificate.
  • Understand the H&S duties of Designers and Principal Contractors.
  • Competence in managing and interpreting health and safety data, identifying risk and opportunities, and being able to action and/or provide advice on opportunities where appropriate.
  • Ability to work within a dispersed team environment and develop relationships and rapport with all stakeholders.
  • Willingness to continually learn and develop.
  • Potential to develop strong influencing skills to promote and ensure compliance and best practice in operational situations where it is essential to find a solution to the problem if risk is identified.
  • Good listening and communication skills with the ability to influence and interact with people at all levels in a diplomatic and persuasive manner.
  • Training/presentation skills and experience or aptitude and willingness to learn in this area.
  • Able to work effectively under pressure, supporting others to do the same.
  • Can work with and manage appropriately sensitive and confidential information, dealing with all stakeholders with the highest level of respect and professionalism.
  • Strong organisational skills – can effectively manage a number of projects concurrently and meet objectives.
  • Reasonably experienced in the use of MS Office tools (MS Teams, PowerPoint, Outlook, Word, Excel etc).
