Overall Purpose of The Job
- The Head of Learning Design and Development leads the end-to-end strategy and execution of high-quality learning content creation across digital, blended, and instructor-led formats. This role is responsible for managing a team of content developers and collaborating with subject matter experts (SMEs) to ensure training materials are accurate, engaging, and aligned with business goals, industry standards, and regulatory compliance requirements.
Key Responsibilities and Tasks
Strategic Leadership
- Define and execute the learning design strategy in alignment with organizational objectives.
- Lead the planning and implementation of scalable learning programs across the organization or client base.
Learning Design and Innovation
- Oversee the development of digital, instructor-led, blended, and immersive learning solutions.
- Champion innovative learning approaches including microlearning, gamification, simulation, and AR/VR.
- Ensure learning methodologies align with adult learning principles and assessment best practices.
Team Leadership
- Manage and mentor a multi disciplinary team of instructional designers and content developers.
- Drive continuous improvement and professional development within the team.
Quality Assurance
- Establish quality assurance processes to ensure content accuracy, consistency and effectiveness.
- Maintain version control and documentation for all training materials.
Stakeholder Collaboration
- Collaborate with Ship Management offices, Crewing teams, HSSEQ / Compliance teams to gather content requirements.
- Work closely with instructional designers and platform admins to ensure seamless content delivery.
Analytics & Impact
- Monitor and analyze learning program effectiveness using data and learner feedback.
- Recommend improvements based on insights and performance metrics.

- 5+ years of experience in learning design, with 2+ years in a leadership role
- Proven experience in managing digital learning projects from concept to implementation.
- Familiarity with SCORM/xAPI, e-learning tools (e.g., Articulate, Adobe Captivate), and media production.
- Adaptive towards technology.
- Strong ability to communicate with stakeholders at all levels.
- Ability to lead a team in a multi-cultural dynamic environment.
- Excellent project management and collaboration skills.
- Attention to detail and a passion for developing quality learning interventions.
Desirable
- Knowledge on Maritime legislation, regulation and Industry standards.
- Proficiency in e-learning development tools (e.g. Articulate Storyline, Adobe Captivate).
- Experience working with maritime LMS platforms (e.g. Ocean Learning Platform).
