Job summary

NHS Ayrshire & Arran seeks a Head of Clinical Engineering for the Diagnostic Services Division at University Hospital Crosshouse. The role provides operational leadership across acute, community and hosted services, ensuring safe medical device management, governance and procurement support.

You will drive service improvement, CPD, and collaborate with clinical and technical stakeholders while supervising staff and managing contracts to deliver value for money for the Board.

Qualifications

• Honours degree in Electronics, Mechanical or Biomedical Engineering or equivalent.
• Postgraduate qualification or relevant experience in a related field.
• Evidence of continuing professional development (CPD).

Responsibilities

• Provide operational leadership of the Clinical Engineering service across multiple NHS Ayrshire & Arran sites.
• Ensure safe, effective and efficient medical device management, lifecycle and procurement support.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Head of Clinical Engineering within our Diagnostic Services Division based at University Hospital Crosshouse

Hours And Shift Pattern

Monday to Friday 36 hours per week

What You Will Do

The Head of Clinical Engineering provides operational leadership of NHS Ayrshire & Arran’s Clinical Engineering service, ensuring the safe, effective and efficient delivery of medical device management across acute, community and hosted services, including lifecycle and procurement support. This post implements the organisation’s Medical Device governance framework, ensuring compliance with device safety requirements, training standards, alert management processes and relevant regulatory guidance, supporting high-quality care and service delivery. They are required to support service improvement and innovation within Clinical Engineering, contributing to the safe integration of medical devices and associated technologies. Assist in the management of maintenance contracts and external providers to ensure effective service delivery and value for money for the Board.

Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:

• Honours degree in Electronic, Mechanical or Biomedical Engineering (or equivalent relevant qualification).
• Postgraduate qualification or equivalent experience in a relevant field.
• Evidence of continuing professional development.
• Management training or equivalent experience.
• Specialist knowledge of medical device management, maintenance, calibration and safety testing across a range of equipment.
• Understanding of relevant legislation, standards and guidance relating to medical devices (e.g. MHRA guidance, IEC standards, health and safety requirements).
• Knowledge of equipment lifecycle management, asset systems and service delivery processes.
• Good financial awareness, with experience of managing budgets and resources within defined limits.
• Well-developed communication, organisational and problem-solving skills.
• Significant experience working within a Clinical Engineering or equivalent technical healthcare environment.
• Experience of supervising staff and managing service delivery in a complex organisation.
• Experience in medical equipment maintenance, repair, procurement support and compliance with standards.
• Experience of contributing to service improvement, projects and implementation of new processes or technologies.
• Experience of working collaboratively with clinical and technical stakeholders.
• The post involves work in an area of rapidly changing technology and it is a requirement that the postholder actively undertakes CPD activity.
• Driving Licence.
