Job description

Summary:

VIAVI (NASDAQ: VIAV) has a 100+ year history of technical innovations that have evolved to keep pace and address our customers’ most pressing business issues. We make equipment, software, and systems that help to plan, deploy, certify, monitor, and optimize all kinds of networks - like those for mobile phones, service providers, large businesses and data centers. VIAVI is also a leader in high performance thin film optical coatings and engineered diffusers, providing light management solutions to anti-counterfeiting, consumer electronics, automotive, defense and instrumentation markets.

We are the people behind the products that help keep the world connected – at home, school, work, at play, and everywhere in between. VIAVI employees are fierce about supporting customer success and we welcome people who bring their best every day to the company - to question, to collaborate and to push for solutions that will delight our customers.

We are looking for a Hardware Development Engineer to join our engineering team designing and supporting our wireless test product range. We make test systems that support our customers in developing the latest 5G-Advanced and 6G base stations and networks. It’s a great chance to work on these cutting-edge technologies including Multi-User MIMO and ORAN.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Requirements analysis and design of test and measurement products and sub-modules.
  • Design of digital electronics hardware to component level.
  • Design of FPGA hardware (generally using the latest AMD FPGAs, including Versal).
  • Development and debug of FPGA VHDL code.
  • Design, testing and validation of high-speed serial interfaces such as PCIe, Aurora, JESD, and Ethernet.
  • Design of interfaces and control blocks for HW components such as ADC, DAC, I2C, SPI devices, PROMs, SDRAM.
  • Design of supporting electronic circuitry such as power conditioning, clocking, data conversion.
  • Development of PCBs, including schematic entry, working with PCB designers and mechanical engineers.
  • Design and signal integrity analysis of high-speed digital tracks, transitions and interconnects.
  • Participating in the investigation of new technologies and techniques.
  • Supporting the introduction of new designs into production.

Pre-Requisites / Skills / Experience Requirements:

  • Degree level qualification in relevant Engineering discipline.
  • Proven communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Experience developing high-speed digital PCBs.
  • Developing FPGA hardware and VHDL code, ideally on AMD FPGAs.
  • Development and timing closure of control logic and interfaces to HW devices.
  • Experience with modern high-speed serial interfaces is highly desirable, including physical design of PCB tracking and analysis using signal integrity tools.
  • General electronics design skills. Ability to apply them to the design of supporting circuitry such as power supply blocks, interface logic and basic analogue circuitry such as interfaces to data converters.
  • Thermal design considerations.
  • Experience in testing and validating modules, PCBs and FPGA designs against product and design requirements.
  • Experience of development of FPGA processing blocks to perform DSP and communication functions is desirable, including the use of MATLAB models for validation.
  • A good understanding of such DSP techniques and of the associated 3GPP telecommunications technologies and standards would be a bonus.
  • Experience with embedded processor hardware would be a bonus.
  • Programming skills (e.g., C#, C++, Python) would be a bonus.
  • Strong collaboration and team working skills, including cross-functionally, with the ability to establish and maintain effective relationships across all levels.
  • Ability to influence senior stakeholders.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • The ability to work within multiple and/or complex projects simultaneously in a deadline-driven environment.
  • Ability to mentor and coach the same or junior levels.
  • Ability to solve complex issues using in depth evaluation methods and techniques.
  • Contributes to strategic decision-making.
