Job summary

The Economist Group is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead our Applied AI and Data Science team. This role blends people leadership with hands-on engineering, guiding AI and NLP systems across our products and internal tools.

You will partner with product, data engineering and business stakeholders to drive AI-native engineering and scalable production-grade solutions, while championing responsible AI and secure delivery.

Qualifications

• Proven track record leading AI/ML engineering teams.
• Experience balancing hands-on work with people leadership.
• Strong Python and cloud-native engineering background.

Responsibilities

• Lead and mentor AI/ML engineers and data scientists.
• Own delivery planning, resourcing, and priorities with product teams.
• Shape AI architecture for agentic and NLP systems.
• Hands-on coding, reviews and implementation when needed.
• Set standards for code quality, testing and observability.
• Drive CI/CD, experiment tracking and production readiness.
• Collaborate with Product, Security, Legal and stakeholders.
• Hire and grow the team to match the AI roadmap.
