Job summary

The Economist Group is seeking a Head of Product & Engineering to lead the AI Lab's product and technical work. You will guide the full 0-1 journey from discovery to production, ensuring products are valuable, reliable and aligned with The Economist's heritage.

This hands-on leadership role spans product, engineering and design, working with editorial colleagues to create impactful AI-enabled experiences that support trusted journalism.

Qualifications

• Experience leading the development of B2C digital products, with accountability for both product outcomes and engineering delivery.
• A track record of taking products from 0-1: finding valuable problems, testing assumptions, shipping quickly and learning from real users.
• Strong background in consumer subscription, media, e-commerce or marketplace models.

Responsibilities

• Set the direction for the AI Lab's product and technical work, shaping roadmaps and validating products.
• Lead and grow a multidisciplinary team across product, design and engineering, fostering rapid innovation and quality.
• Own the 0-1 process from discovery to beta to production, using evidence to decide on scaling or pivoting.
• Collaborate with editorial colleagues to imagine products that amplify journalism while preserving quality, provenance and independence.
• Define engineering practices, architecture direction, and make build-versus-buy decisions.
• Connect lab work to platforms, data and priorities across The Economist Group and measure success.
