Job summary

whg is seeking a Grounds Worker to maintain outdoor spaces across our communities in Walsall. You’ll perform fencing, paving, gutter cleaning, and general grounds maintenance, including tasks at height with ladders or scaffolding.

You’ll be out daily in the community, ensuring safety, accessibility and resident satisfaction, with travel between sites and a valid driving licence required. We offer leave, pension and wellbeing benefits.

Qualifications

  • Full driving licence required with minimal points
  • Ability to travel between whg housing stock locations
  • Demonstrable labouring/ ground works experience
  • Experience of fencing & slabbing
  • Willingness to work at height using ladders/scaffolding
  • Experience in customer-facing service
  • Ability to meet tight timescales
  • Clear and effective communication with customers and colleagues
  • Good listening to interpret information and address concerns

Responsibilities

We’re looking for a Grounds Worker to help keep our communities safe, tidy, and well-maintained. If you have experience in fencing, paving, gutter cleaning and general grounds maintenance, we have an exciting opportunity for you!

As a Grounds Worker, you’ll play a key role in maintaining the outdoor spaces of both occupied and void properties, ensuring that our communities remain well-kept, safe, and accessible.

Every day, you’ll be out and about in the community, making improvements whether it’s repairing or replacing fencing, relaying or renewing paving, or clearing and repairing gutters. Some of these duties will involve working at height using ladders, scaffolding or other approved access equipment in accordance with safe working practices. No two days are the same! You’ll tackle different challenges and see the real impact of your efforts.

  • Fencing – Installing, repairing, and maintaining fences to keep properties safe and secure.
  • Paving & Slabbing – Laying and repairing slabs and paving to improve outdoor areas.
  • Gutter Cleaning & Repairs – Using Sky (Gutter) Vacuuming equipment to clean and maintain gutters.
  • Working at Height – Safely undertake duties requiring the use of ladders, scaffolding and other approved access equipment, complying with all relevant health and safety procedures and risk assessments.
  • Groundwork & Maintenance – Including tarmac repairs, drainage works, garden clearance, and landscaping.
  • Safety & Compliance – Following Health & Safety regulations, including Asbestos and COSHH requirements.
  • Customer Service – Interacting with residents in a friendly and professional manner, ensuring they feel respected and informed.
  • Using Technology – Managing tasks efficiently using handheld devices (PDA, Tablet, etc.).

We're looking for someone who has:

  • A full driving licence (no more than 6 penalty points)
  • The ability to travel efficiently from location to location around whg housing stock
  • Demonstrable experience of labouring/ ground works.
  • Experience of fencing & slabbing.
  • The ability and willingness to undertake duties involving working at height using ladders and scaffolding.
  • Experience of working in a customer facing service.
  • The ability to work to tight timescales in order to meet the demands of customers and the business.
  • The ability to communicate clearly and effectively with customers and colleagues.
  • The ability to listen and interpret information effectively, and able to obtain information from customers and take appropriate action and deal sensitively with complaints and customer dissatisfaction.
