Job summary

AECOM's Ground Engineering team in the UK invites an Industrial or Summer Placement Student to contribute to ground investigation design, data collection, and engineering analysis in a hybrid work environment based in St Albans.

You will work with engineers and geologists on projects across energy, transport, and infrastructure, gaining hands-on experience with desk studies, field surveys, and 3D modelling tools.

Qualifications

• Pursuing a relevant degree with a good academic standing
• Proficiency in MS Office; knowledge of AutoCAD or Civil 3D is advantageous
• Strong interest in geotechnics and willingness to travel to project sites
• Excellent written and spoken English communication

Responsibilities

• Support Ground Investigation Projects – assist with desk studies, site inspections, rockface surveys, and geomorphological mapping.
• Data Collection and Analysis – gather, manage, and interpret geological and geotechnical data using tools like OpenGround and Leapfrog for 3D modelling.
• Technical Reporting – assist in preparing interpretative and design reports, ground models, and technical documentation.
• Design Support – assist in design and assessment of foundations, retaining walls, slope stability, earthworks, and rock slope stabilisation.
• Numerical Modelling – develop skills in 2D/3D numerical analysis using company software.
• Tender Documentation – assist in preparing Ground Engineering tender documents.
• Collaboration and Teamwork – work with multidisciplinary teams to deliver integrated project solutions.
• Health, Safety, and Sustainability Awareness – apply HSE practices in site and office tasks.
