About Us

Diamond Light Source is the UK’s national synchrotron, serving scientists and researchers from around the world. It is a not-for-profit joint venture, providing academic and industry researchers access to facilities that enable world-changing science.

The machine generates extremely bright light that is directed into laboratories known as beamlines. Scientists use the light to find solutions to humanity’s most critical challenges, from health, food security and biotechnology to energy, climate change and advanced materials.

Diamond is in the process of upgrading to a fourth-generation synchrotron, generating a brighter and more coherent light. This will provide enhanced imaging and analysis capabilities, helping the UK to remain at the forefront of scientific discovery.

About The Role

We now have an opportunity for a Grant Coordinator to support the Project Lead (PL), Dr Chris Nicklin, in the scientific coordination, administration, and delivery of the project. Working across a complex network of partners, the postholder will coordinate project activities, facilitate effective communication and collaboration, monitor progress against agreed objectives and milestones, and help ensure that contractual, financial, and funding requirements are met. It will involve supporting and liaising with the other investigators to ensure progress of the project in addition to monitoring and evaluation. Other activities will include overseeing the finances, coordinating travel information (visas, tickets etc..) and collating outputs relating to impact from the project.

The CoMPaSS partnership brings together leading South African researchers and synchrotron scientists from Diamond Light Source (UK) to address global scientific challenges through collaborative, world-class research. Supported by the Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF), the partnership is committed to developing the next generation of research leaders while strengthening long-term scientific capacity in both countries. Through a co-created vision, CoMPaSS seeks to establish a sustainable collaboration focused on four research themes: Decarbonisation and Renewable Energy; Advanced Manufacturing and Materials Security; Global Health and Disease Biology; and Food, Environment and Agricultural Stability. These themes encompass the study of next-generation materials, including those for hydrogen storage, advanced batteries and catalysts, alongside research into protein crystals and solutions, to drive innovation in emerging technologies and deepen understanding of the causes and treatment of disease.

About You

You will hold a qualification relating to science or project management and strong experience managing projects and matrix working.

Monitoring financial information, milestones and working with multiple stakeholders is desirable but not essential
