Job description

My client are an established Transport Planning & Engineering Consultancy that provides advice to their clients on transport planning and infrastructure design matters.

The chosen candidate would work within a busy and friendly office in Bath. Their aim is expose their staff to as many aspects of projects as possible, which are mostly private sector developments.

The core business is development related, and includes dealing with transport and highway aspects of development proposals including: feasibility studies, planning applications, Local Plan allocations, section 106/278 agreements and occasional planning appeals.

On-going projects include:
  • Advice Bath Rugby's proposed new stadium at The Rec
  • Advice to University of Bath, Bath Spa University and Oxford University on a range of transport matters, including on-site infrastructure, travel planning, masterplanning and development projects (both on-campus and on University land-holdings)
  • A variety of housing developments around the south west up to around 2,000 dwellings
  • Hospital developments including private hospital developments for Circle around the country
  • Advice to B&Q on operational issues and store re-purposing/site enhancements

They are seeking a graduate transport planner ranging from a new graduate through to a graduate with a couple of years experience.

The role includes site visits, organising data collection, data analysis, trip generation/mode share/distribution assessments (to derive traffic flows and predictions of trips by non-car modes of travel), research and understanding of relevant transport policies, accessibility appraisals, production of drawings for reports, access junction and highway improvement design (to planning stage), junction assessments, written elements of reports and travel plans moving towards moving towards drafting complete reports.

Relevant degrees would have covered transport or town and country planning, geography or civil engineering, although other disciplines with an analytical base will be considered. Good work related experience and/or taught knowledge of transport planning would be an advantage.

The aim is to promote capable and motivated staff on merit, as they acquire skills that help the company. When a basic understanding of the fundamentals can be demonstrated, there will be opportunities for pro-active staff to take responsibility for elements of projects and to liaise with clients, councils and other professionals as experience grows.

In addition to transport planning we undertake the detailed design of highway infrastructure, so there would be opportunities to gain experience of that area also.

Common sense and a practical approach to problem solving are qualities that we value highly. The position will appeal to an enthusiastic candidate looking for a varied workload, who wishes to gain experience in a friendly company with a reputation for delivering high quality work.

Applicants must either be EU nationals, or hold a current permit enabling them to work in the UK. A full UK driving licence would be expected. Overseas students will need to have achieved a minimum of IELTS level 8 in listening, reading, writing and speaking.

Competence in the following would be an advantage to candidates:
  • Commissioning and analysis of traffic counts, presenting data diagrammatically in Excel.
  • Liaison with local authorities etc to obtain traffic, accident and mapping data etc.
  • Use of TRICS database.
  • Use of TEMPRO to apply traffic growth.
  • Junction modelling in PICADY, ARCADY, TRANSYT, LINSIG.
  • Basic drawing skills in AutoCAD.
  • Swept path analysis using AutoTRACK.
  • Producing plans of site locations, pedestrian walk isochrones and bus routes.
  • Reliable and comprehensive analysis of public transport availability.
  • An understanding of the principles of the planning system and transport policies.
  • Technical report writing.
  • The principles of workplace and residential travel plans.
