The opportunity

We believe HVDC (High Voltage Direct Current) technology is a sustainable solution for energy transfer over long distances, connecting electricity networks with minimal losses. It also helps improve electricity quality and stabilizes power grids. HVDC is essential for offshore wind power and underwater transmissions.

As a Hardware Design Engineer, Graduate level at HVDC, you will design control cabinet layouts, including hundreds of circuit boards for measurements, control, and calculations. The system includes user interfaces like HMI, diagnostic tools, and IT infrastructure, utilizing our in-house real-time platform MACH to meet industry standards. Please note this is a direct entry role, not on a graduate rotation scheme.

Location: Glasgow, UK. We cannot provide visa support for this position.

How You’ll make an impact

  • Implement control and protection hardware solutions for HVDC/HVAC systems.
  • Design cubicles and integrate all hardware components.
  • Create bills of materials and terminal diagrams, coordinate with manufacturers, and perform cubicle inspections.
  • Prepare cable lists and termination schedules.
  • Develop design specifications, overview diagrams, and clarify concepts with coordinators.
  • Participate in or lead design review meetings to identify errors and improve processes.
  • Coordinate with other departments and stakeholders.
  • Prepare documents like CBD, PCD, cable schedules, and connection tables.
  • Validate design drawings from suppliers against specifications and standards.
  • Support functional tests and site commissioning, designing layouts with access points, earthing, and cable routing.
  • Work closely with customers and colleagues to ensure delivery meets requirements.
  • Collaborate across disciplines and share best practices.
  • Opportunity to travel internationally for power station projects.
  • Plan and organize your work with problem-solving and autonomy.
  • Embrace Hitachi Energy’s values of safety and integrity.

Your Background

  • Site experience in testing and commissioning is a plus.
  • Technical coordination skills with suppliers and stakeholders.
  • Willingness to travel to project sites and offices.
  • Experience with CAD tools like Engineering Base or Ruplan is valuable.
  • EMC knowledge or experience with AC substations/control systems is a merit.
