Job description

Hardware Design Engineer (Electrical Engineering), 1-4 Years (Glasgow)

We believe HVDC (High Voltage Direct Current) technology offers a sustainable long-term solution for energy transfer, especially over long distances and for connecting electricity networks with minimal losses. HVDC also helps improve electricity quality and stabilizes power grids, making it the preferred choice for offshore wind power and underwater transmissions.

As a Hardware Design Engineer (1-4 years experience required) at HVDC, you will design control cabinet layouts, including hundreds of circuit boards for measurement, control, and calculations. Your role will also involve developing user interfaces such as HMI, diagnostic tools, and IT infrastructure, utilizing our in-house real-time platform MACH to meet industry standards.

Location: Glasgow, United Kingdom. Please note we cannot provide visa support for this position, including graduate visas.

How You’ll Make an Impact

  • Implement control and protection hardware solutions for HVDC/HVAC systems.
  • Design cubicles and integrate hardware components.
  • Create Bill of Materials and terminal diagrams for control and protection equipment, coordinating with manufacturers and performing inspections.
  • Prepare cable lists and termination schedules.
  • Develop design specifications, overview diagrams, and clarify concepts with coordinators.
  • Participate in or lead design review meetings to identify errors and inefficiencies, implementing corrective actions.
  • Coordinate with other departments and stakeholders to plan work divisions.
  • Prepare documentation such as CBD, PCD, cable schedules, and connection tables.
  • Validate supplier drawings to ensure compliance with specifications and standards.
  • Support functional performance tests and site commissioning, including designing cubicle layouts with access points, earthing, and cable routing.
  • Work closely with customers and internal teams to meet requirements and standards.
  • Collaborate with engineering colleagues and share best practices across projects.
  • Opportunity to travel internationally to contribute to power station projects worldwide.
  • Enjoy the flexibility to plan your work and solve problems proactively.
  • Uphold Hitachi Energy’s core values of safety and integrity, taking responsibility and caring for colleagues and the business.

Your Background

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in electrical engineering.
  • Basic knowledge of control & protection panel design (CRP).
  • Site experience in testing and commissioning is advantageous but not essential.
  • Technical coordination experience with suppliers and stakeholders across locations.
  • Willingness to travel to project sites and offices.
  • Experience with CAD tools like Engineering Base or Ruplan is beneficial.
  • Knowledge of EMC, AC substations, or control systems is a plus.
  • Based in the UK with the right to work there.
