Job summary

NatureScot’s Peatland ACTION Data & Evidence Team seeks a GIS specialist to manage data and support peatland restoration across Scotland. You will develop a PostGIS database, collate and analyse data, and train staff on best practices in data management.

The role emphasizes collaboration within the team and with external partners, while also enabling independent work and strategic input into development and innovation.

Qualifications

  • Expert in desktop GIS tools (preferably QGIS) for data collection.
  • Excellent experience administering PostgreSQL/PostGIS for spatial data management and analysis, with some webmapping exposure.
  • Ability to process and analyse spatial data using R, Python or GDAL tools.
  • Strong organisational skills to manage reactive workloads and long-term projects.
  • Excellent communication with ability to translate concepts and train diverse audiences.
  • Good interpersonal skills to work with remotely based colleagues.
  • Background in Earth Science or ecology, with peatland knowledge or interest.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the development of a PostGIS Peatland ACTION database.
  • Collate, manage, analyse, report on and disseminate Peatland ACTION data.
  • Provide expert advice, training and support for Peatland ACTION staff on data management.
  • Develop infrastructure to make spatial data accessible internally, to the Scottish Government and to the public.
  • Develop online application portal for Peatland ACTION and the NatureScot grants system.
  • Prepare responses to data requests from diverse sources, including media and government.
  • Liaise with NatureScot’s GIS, Cyber Security, Developer and Information Management teams.
