Job summary

Historic Environment Scotland is seeking a proactive GIS professional to support and develop enterprise mapping services, spatial datasets, and cloud-based GIS technologies from Longmore House, Edinburgh.

You will play a key role in delivering high-quality GIS services while contributing to digital transformation across the organisation. The role offers hybrid working and a starting salary of £34,721 per year, with a permanent contract and Grade 3.

Qualifications

  • Experience with GIS in spatial database environments and ETL processes.
  • Proficiency in Excel for data analysis and transformation.
  • Experience managing GIS servers and data pipelines.
  • Excellent communication, able to explain technical concepts clearly.
  • Python scripting with ArcPy and geoprocessing tools.
  • Track record of developing and enhancing GIS applications.
  • Experience collaborating with cross-functional teams.

Responsibilities

  • Support operation and development of HES GIS services, apps, and spatial datasets.
  • Maintain GIS web services and data pipelines.
  • Assist with incidents, service requests, upgrades and licensing.
  • Collaborate with GIS, Oracle, infrastructure and web teams to deliver GIS solutions.
  • Ensure reliable internal and public-facing GIS services.

Location: Longmore House, Edinburgh (with hybrid working)

Working Hours: Monday - Friday, 35 hours per week

Interviews: To be held in person at Longmore House, Edinburgh on Week Commencing 1st October

Key Responsibilities of this role

The GIS Service Technician will support the operation and development of HES GIS services, applications, and spatial datasets. Key responsibilities include maintaining GIS web services and data pipelines, assisting with incidents and service requests, supporting system upgrades and licensing, and working with colleagues across GIS, Oracle, infrastructure, and web development teams to deliver reliable and effective GIS solutions for both internal and public-facing services.

Key Requirements of the role
  • Knowledge of working with GIS within a spatial database environment, including ETL processes.
  • Proficiency in Excel for data analysis and transformation.
  • Experience in managing GIS servers and data pipelines.
  • Excellent communication skills, able to convey technical information in a non-technical way.
  • Python scripting specifically Arcpcy and geoprocessing tools
  • Proven ability to continuously develop and enhance GIS applications
  • Experience in working with cross-functional teams and coordinating with various departments
