GDA Apprentice Business Support – work, earn and learn

Are you organised, eager to learn, with a keen interest in business administration? Do you enjoy helping people and working as part of a team?If so, Royal Greenwich has an exciting opportunity for you to join our Caretaking Team as a Business Support Apprentice.

As Business Support Apprentice, you will play a key role in supporting services that help keep our housing estates clean, safe, and well-maintained.You’ll gain valuable workplace experience while earning a salary and studying towards a Level 3 Business Administration qualification.

The Caretaking Team within the Directorate of Housing & Safer Communities is one of the Royal Borough’s most visible frontline services, delivering cleaning and estate services across council-owned housing estates and supporting residents throughout the borough.

In addition to day-to-day estate cleaning, we also provide services relating to graffiti removal, void clearances, lift shaft cleansing, window cleaning, bin cleansing, Sheltered Housing cleaning, Temporary Accommodation handyperson services and fire door inspections.

You will be required to perform a rangeof basic administrationduties, including note taking, communicating professionally withresidents, Councillors, contractors and Royal Greenwich colleagues, handling calls received by the service, logging the calls and ensuring all the necessary information is gathered from the caller. You will also deal with basic enquiries and direct more complex calls to the appropriate team member.

Under supervision, you will develop the skills and knowledge required to undertake the duties of aBusiness Support Assistant. Throughout the Apprenticeship programme you will support staff with the following duties:

  1. Monitoring service requests and supporting the efficient delivery of service to customers.
  2. Updating records on the Council’s database systems, inputting accurate information and providing data and reports as required
  3. Taking notes at meetings
  4. Booking meeting rooms
  5. Photocopying, scanning and shredding documents
  6. Supporting the management of the team’s shared email inbox
  7. Dealing with telephone enquiries
  8. Logging communal repairs

Personal Development:

  • To undertake a varied programme of work experience, practical and theoretical training leading to a recognised apprenticeship qualification inBusiness Admin level 3 as part of an apprenticeship programme.
  • To actively participate in their own development plan, which will be agreed with your line manager and the assessor from the training provider. To undertake the requirements of the academic element of the apprenticeship (e.g. attendance at college and completion of academic work). A minimum of 20% of working week will be allocated to this.

To be eligible to apply for these apprenticeships you must be living in the Royal borough of Greenwich(or if you have been in the care of the Royal Borough of Greenwich but are or have been in the living outside the borough).

These opportunities are also open to

  • Children 16 to 18 years who are looked after by the Royal Borough of Greenwich and have been for more than 13 weeks (which does not need to be all one period); AND
  • *To care leavers who can be young people aged between 16 and 24 years (to 25th birthday) who were looked after by the Royal Borough of Greenwich Children’s Services for a period of 13 weeks or more since the age of 14 (which does not need to be all one period) but must include a time after the 16th birthday.

Please note: to be eligible for funding to complete the apprenticeship qualification you must have ordinarily been a resident in the UK for at least the previous three years before the start of the apprenticeship and have the right to work in the UK.

If you have been granted leave to remain status, this must cover the entire duration of the qualification to be eligible for funding and for your application to move to the next stage.

The main eligibility criteria:

  • As some young people may turn 16 between the end of June and beginning of September (they would need to wait until they are 16 before starting their apprenticeship)
  • Not already qualified to the same or higher level in the samefield
  • Working at the specified level in maths and English required for the qualification
  • Applicants who do not hold GCSE or Functional skills in maths and English will be screened for suitability
  • Have lived in the UK or EU for 3 years prior to applying for this apprenticeship
  • To qualify for Government funding for the apprenticeship, applicants must have the correct status which is usually having been resident in the UK for 3 years, but there are some exceptions to this which will be checked at the time of application.

As part of the screening process, you will need to demonstrate that you meet the required maths and English skills criteria. This can be done by providing evidence of your GCSEs or Functional Skills certificates.

If you do not have these, the learning provider delivering the qualification will carry out all necessary screening and verification of your skills and qualifications. They will assess whether you meet the eligibility requirements for the programme.
