Job summary

EMBL-EBI seeks a software specialist to deliver data portals for major biodiversity and sustainability projects. You will build and maintain APIs, visualization tools, and MCP-based interfaces to enable researchers to query data via natural language and gain insights from large genomic datasets.

Reporting to the Genome Analysis Team Leader, you will collaborate with data generators and project users, support metadata quality, and extend portals with project-specific needs while integrating cloud

Qualifications

• BSc or MSc in computer science or related field.
• Expertise in Python and popular libraries (NumPy, Pandas, PySpark).
• Experience with relational and non-relational databases (PostgreSQL, Elasticsearch, Redis).
• Extensive data warehousing, big data processing and ETL experience.
• Unix/Linux proficiency; Git collaboration experience.
• Willingness to learn new skills and work independently or in a team.
• Strong English communication and interpersonal skills.

Responsibilities

• Develop and support software for data curation, validation, distribution and visualization of biodiversity data.
• Define and implement metadata standards with large scientific communities.
• Build project-specific data portals and extend existing web portals to meet consortium needs.
• Develop APIs and bespoke visualization solutions; expose data through MCP servers and agent-based interfaces.
• Support containerised workflows and cloud platform integration; assist users with metadata descriptions.
