Job summary

EMBL-EBI on the Wellcome Genome Campus in Cambridgeshire seeks a software engineer to deliver data portals for sustainability and biodiversity projects. You will work with large scientific communities to define metadata standards and build project-specific portals, APIs and visualisations.

Reporting to the Genome Analysis Team Leader, you will support data curation, validation, distribution and cloud workflows, collaborate across teams and help expose data through MCP servers and agent-based

Qualifications

• BSc or MSc in computer science or related fields.
• Expertise in Python, incl. NumPy, Pandas, PySpark; frameworks: Django, Django Rest Framework, FastAPI.
• Relational (PostgreSQL) and non-relational (Elasticsearch, Redis) databases.
• Extensive experience in data warehousing, big data processing and ETL.
• Demonstrable Unix/Linux experience.
• Experience with GIT and collaborative software environments.
• Willingness to learn new skills as required by the project.
• Self-motivated; capable of working independently and in a team.
• Excellent communication and English language skills.

Responsibilities

• Deliver data portals for biodiversity and sustainability projects; handle data curation, coordination, validation, distribution and visualization.
• Define and implement metadata standards; develop software to validate and improve data descriptions.
• Develop project-specific portals; extend existing web data portals; create APIs and visualization solutions.
• Expose consortium data via MCP servers and agent-based interfaces for natural language insights.
• Support containerised workflows and cloud platform integration; collaborate with data generators and users.
