Job summary

SILA Linguists is expanding its pool of freelance Swedish interpreters and translators for business, legal, technical and public service assignments in the UK. Work includes remote and on-site interpreting, plus document translation for Nordic markets.

We welcome candidates with native or near-native Swedish and English, a recognised interpreting or translation qualification (DPSI/DPI or equivalent), and a current DBS check or willingness to obtain one. Right to work in the UK is required.

Qualifications

• Native or near-native fluency in Swedish and English (spoken and written).
• Qualified interpreting or translation qualification (DPSI/DPI) or equivalent experience.

Responsibilities

• Translate commercial, technical and legal content into natural Swedish for Nordic audiences.
• Interpret in business meetings, legal proceedings and medical appointments.
• Research subject-specific vocabulary before assignments, particularly for medical and legal bookings.
• Attend video and telephone assignments from a quiet, private space with a reliable connection.

Job description

We are recruiting freelance Swedish interpreters and translators for business, legal, technical and public service assignments. Most requests are for commercial and technical translation.

Swedish speakers in the UK include professionals, students and families from Sweden and Swedish-speaking Finland. Most requests are commercial, covering contracts, technical documentation, software and marketing material for Swedish and Nordic markets, where accurate terminology and natural style matter.

Public service interpreting also arises, including healthcare, courts and family matters involving Swedish-speaking clients.

Responsibilities

• Translate commercial, technical and legal content into natural Swedish for Nordic audiences.
• Interpret in business meetings, legal proceedings and medical appointments.
• Interpret accurately and impartially, following the professional code of conduct and keeping all information confidential.
• Research subject-specific vocabulary before assignments, particularly for medical and legal bookings.
• Translate and proofread documents carefully, querying unclear source text rather than guessing.
• Attend video and telephone assignments from a quiet, private space with a reliable connection.
• Transcribe and translate audio and video recordings, such as interviews and calls, if you have the skills for transcription work.

Requirements

• Native or near-native fluency in Swedish and English, spoken and written.
• A recognised interpreting or translation qualification, such as the DPSI or DPI, or equivalent experience. Membership of CIOL, ITI or NRPSI is welcome but not required.
• Norwegian or Danish is an advantage for some projects.
• A current DBS check, or willingness to obtain one, for assignments that require it.
• The right to work in the UK for on-site UK assignments.
• A dependable internet connection and a confidential space for remote interpreting.
