SILA Linguists is seeking freelance Thai interpreters and translators for a range of assignments across family, immigration, healthcare, legal and business sectors in the UK. The role requires calm, impartial handling of sensitive cases and flexible scheduling to fit client briefs.

Candidates should hold Thai-English proficiency, relevant qualifications (DPSI/DPI or translation degree) and be prepared for DBS checks where required. Remote and on-site work are available.

Qualifications

• Full professional fluency in both Thai and English.
• Qualifications such as DPSI, DPI or translation degree or equivalent experience; CIOL/ITI/NRPSI welcome.

We are looking for freelance Thai interpreters and translators for family, immigration, healthcare, legal and business assignments. The work can be sensitive and calls for a calm, impartial approach.

Thai speakers in the UK include people who came to join a spouse or partner, as well as students and professionals. Assignments can involve sensitive matters such as domestic abuse or immigration, so a calm, impartial approach is essential. Some clients from north-east Thailand speak Isan, which is close to Lao. Politeness particles and levels of formality are important in Thai.

Assignments take place in family courts, immigration matters, healthcare settings and police interviews, and business work includes translation of contracts and marketing for Thailand.

Responsibilities

• Interpret in family, immigration and safeguarding settings with sensitivity and impartiality.
• Translate Thai civil documents, such as marriage and birth certificates, for UK use.
• Follow professional standards of accuracy, impartiality and confidentiality on every assignment.
• Prepare for each booking by reviewing the brief and researching specialist terminology in advance.
• Check every translation against the source before delivery and meet agreed deadlines.
• Take on-site assignments at hospitals, courts, offices and other venues, and remote sessions by video or telephone.
• Take on transcription and translation of Thai recordings for legal, research and media clients, if this work interests you.

Requirements

• Full professional fluency in both Thai and English.
• Relevant qualifications such as the DPSI, DPI or a translation degree, or equivalent professional experience; CIOL, ITI or NRPSI membership is welcome.
• Isan or Lao is an advantage.
• Willingness to undergo a DBS check, which is required for some assignments, such as those involving children or vulnerable adults.
• For on-site work in the UK, the right to work in the UK.
• Reliable internet access and suitable equipment (computer or phone with headset) for video and telephone work.
