Job summary

SILA Linguists is seeking freelance Latvian interpreters and translators for healthcare, employment, legal and public service assignments in the UK. Roles include on-site GP and hospital appointments, police interviews and courts, with remote work options where available and a mix of assignments across sectors.

• Russian is an advantage for clients who prefer it.
• DBS check, or willingness to obtain one, for relevant assignments.
• Right to work in the UK for on-site assignments.

Responsibilities

• Interpret in workplace, health and justice settings, confirming the client's preferred language first.
• Translate Latvian documents, reproducing names exactly as in official records.
• Interpret accurately and impartially, following the professional code of conduct and keeping all information confidential.
• Research subject-specific vocabulary before assignments, particularly for medical and legal bookings.
• Translate and proofread documents carefully, querying unclear source text rather than guessing.
• Transcribe and translate audio and video recordings, such as interviews and calls, if you have the skills for transcription work.

Job description

We are looking for freelance Latvian interpreters and translators for healthcare, employment, legal and public service assignments. Speakers who can also work in Russian are particularly useful.

Latvian speakers in the UK often work in food production, agriculture, logistics and care. Many Latvians also speak Russian, and some clients from Latvia prefer Russian, so we ask about both. Translators should be confident with Latvian diacritics and the way names are adapted in Latvian grammar.

Assignments include GP and hospital appointments, employment matters, police interviews and courts. Translation work covers employment documents, certificates and medical records.

Responsibilities

• A recognised interpreting or translation qualification, such as the DPSI or DPI, or equivalent experience. Membership of CIOL, ITI or NRPSI is welcome but not required.
• Russian is an advantage for clients who prefer it.
• A current DBS check, or willingness to obtain one, for assignments that require it.
• The right to work in the UK for on-site UK assignments.
• A dependable internet connection and a confidential space for remote interpreting.
