Job summary

SILA Linguists is seeking a freelance Azerbaijani interpreter and translator for legal, immigration, business and healthcare work, available remotely or on site in the United Kingdom.

Assignments include legal, medical and business settings with translations of documents and transcripts. You will build glossaries and maintain strict confidentiality while providing interpretation across video, telephone and in-person formats.

Qualifications

• Native or near-native fluency in Azerbaijani and English, spoken and written.
• Willingness to complete a DBS check for healthcare/education/vulnerable settings.
• Right to work in the UK for on-site assignments.

Responsibilities

• Interpret between English and Azerbaijani in legal, business and medical settings.
• Translate Azerbaijani documents in Latin or Cyrillic script with consistent name transliteration.

Job description

Join SILA Linguists as a freelance Azerbaijani interpreter and translator for legal, immigration, business and healthcare work, remotely or on site.

Azerbaijani is the official language of the Republic of Azerbaijan, written today in a Latin alphabet after a long period of Cyrillic. It is closely related to Turkish, and many speakers also know Russian, which is still common in business, technical and older official documents. Iranian Azerbaijani is a related variety with a separate vacancy.

Assignments include business and energy-sector meetings, legal and court work, immigration matters and medical appointments. Translators work on contracts, certificates, court papers and technical documents, sometimes in older Cyrillic-script records.

Responsibilities

• Interpret between English and Azerbaijani in legal, business and medical settings.
• Translate Azerbaijani documents in Latin or older Cyrillic script, keeping transliteration of names consistent.
• Keep everything you hear and read on assignments strictly confidential, and remain impartial throughout.
• Build and maintain your own glossaries for the sectors you work in.
• Attend video and telephone assignments from a quiet, private space with a reliable connection.
• Produce accurate transcripts and English translations of recorded Azeri speech, for example police interviews or research recordings.

Requirements

• Native or near-native fluency in Azerbaijani and English, spoken and written.
• The DPSI (Diploma in Public Service Interpreting), DPI (Diploma in Police Interpreting) or an equivalent qualification is an advantage; CIOL or ITI membership is welcome.
• Russian or Turkish is an advantage, especially for business and legal documents.
• Willingness to complete a DBS check for assignments in healthcare, education or with vulnerable people.
• Right to work in the UK if you will take on-site assignments in the UK.
• A reliable internet connection, headset and quiet, private workspace for remote assignments.
