Job summary

VolkerRail is seeking a proactive Foreman to lead on-site teams across UK rail projects, ensuring safety, quality and productivity. The role involves coordinating direct labour, subcontractors and plant operators, with the flexibility to travel regularly to key locations across the country.

A full UK driving licence is essential. You will work within the Metro & Rail Projects team, driving safe delivery of rail infrastructure, and reporting to Project Managers while supporting safety and quality

VolkerRail is a leading multidisciplinary railway infrastructure contractor on heavy and light rail networks. Our ability to continually deliver projects, from smaller contracts through to our involvement in nationally significant major schemes, has helped our clients bring communities together and provide better services for passengers. VolkerRail comprises two businesses: Major Projects, which is expert in collaborative working and leads on large, multidisciplinary joint venture and alliance projects; and Specialist Businesses, made up of expert divisions in signalling, track, power, electrification and piling, with an in-house plant division and bespoke design teams. These work independently, as subcontractors to the rail sector, or collectively as a Tier One contractor for larger frameworks. We are currently seeking a Foreman to join our Urban Transport & Rail Projects division. This is a national role with regular travel across the UK. Ideally, you will be based within the Doncaster, Sheffield or Scunthorpe region to support travel to key loacations. A full driving licence and willingness to travel are essential.

As a Foreman within our Metro & Rail Projects team, you will play a vital role in the safe, efficient and successful delivery of rail infrastructure projects. Leading site teams and coordinating resources, you will ensure work is completed to the highest standards of safety, quality and performance.

Key responsibilities include:

• Leading and supervising site-based teams, including direct labour, subcontractors and plant operators.
• Delivering allocated work packages in line with safety, quality, programme and budget
• Ensuring all activities are carried out in accordance with company safety and quality
• Implementing instructions issued by Project Managers, Safety Managers and clients.
• Driving productivity and performance on site to achieve project objectives.
• Managing site discipline and promoting a positive safety culture through visible leadership and leading by example.
• Conducting safety inspections, reporting findings and supporting accident and incident investigations.
• Preparing weekly reports on contractual site activities.
• Identifying training and development needs within your team and supporting competence management.
• Building effective working relationships with colleagues, contractors, clients and other key stakeholders.
• Supporting the Supervisor or Senior Foreman when required and contributing to the successful delivery of projects across the business.

About you

We're looking for a proactive and safety-focused rail professional who thrives in a fast-paced operational environment and has a passion for leading teams and delivering high-quality work. You'll ideally have:

• Previous experience in a Foreman, Team Leader or supervisory role within rail, construction or a related operational environment.
• Strong leadership skills with the ability to organise resources, allocate work and motivate teams to perform at their best.
• A thorough understanding of health, safety and quality requirements within a site-based environment.
• Excellent communication and problem-solving skills, with the confidence to engage effectively with colleagues, subcontractors and clients.
• The ability to manage multiple priorities whilst maintaining high standards of safety, quality and productivity.
• A proactive approach to identifying risks, resolving issues and driving continuous improvement.
• A commitment to promoting safe working practices and fostering a positive team culture.
• Flexibility to work across a variety of project locations and environments.
• A full UK driving licence
